Writing for Therapy

-- Quote of the Day --

"Writing ought either to be the manufacture of stories for which there is a market demand – a business as safe and commendable as making soap – or it should be an art, which is always a search for something for which there is no market demand… something new and untried, where the values are intrinsic and have nothing to do with standardized values.

~ Willa Cather

Lately I've found that I have this real need to write this last year - not for publication or promotion or for sharing on this blog - but just for me. It has been an amazing experience. Those stolen moments with the pen gives me a yearning for more, and more time and head space for this process.  33 pages of journaling later, and only a half dozen poems have been written this year - but it is more then I've done in quite a while. Dealing with the chronic illness, and end of life planning of my parents, the grief of their passing really wiped me out and it took over a year before I could do many things. Drumming, writing, and things like this lost their meaning for me ...and perhaps became too powerful for me, in that too much emotions were released at once when I tried them. But lately I've been finding this real urge to get back to these passions full force. At the same time I've felt a real pull to take a lot of time just to zone out in nature... at the cost of my office, and business life. A cost I've been willing to pay, but not without some regrets. I plan to take a few hours today and tomorrow just for me... to explore with the pen and release tensions. I hope you are able to do the same this week - taking just a little time for ourselves is so important.

  1. I agree totally. And different types of writing can provide therapy. I have returned to poetry after attending an eighth grade class reunion in a small midwestern town. I found that I couldn't write about it as fiction or memoir. I wanted to keep the emotions not the facts. So I have been writing a poetry journal of my feelings about going home.
