World of Writing Interview

Carolyn Banguero (of: www.paolosadventures.com ) and I have been in contact since Oct 2011, and we're proud to have her on the blog today for a World of Writing Interview. Carolyn is the author of a children's book, Paolo's Adventures: The Tale of a Very BraveLittle Kitty. She is also a passionate supporter and volunteer for the Meow Cat Rescue - a non-profit, no-kill cat and dog rescueorganization inKirkland, WA. Aportion of the net proceeds from her book are graciously donated to Meow Cat Rescue ( www.meowcatrescue.org ). She tells us that while recovering from heart failure, writing this book was a powerfully positivething to focus on.

Q: Carolyn, tell us about yourself.

A: Volunteering at MEOW Cat Rescue is one of mypassions and the inspiration for my book, Paolo's Adventures - The Taleof a Very Brave Little Kitty. One of the cats, Paolo, had a rare conditionin which his chest was concave. He needed life saving surgery. Ifelt there was definitely a connection since I was recovering from heartfailure. Paolo the cat made an amazingrecovery and so did I (Carolyn was on the heart transplant list one year ago). I neverdid get a transplant and have made a near complete recovery that doctors cannotexplain.

Q: Did you choose writing as a profession, or did itchoose you?

A: Writing definitely chose me. Iwas perfectly content teaching third grade for eight years. In November 2010, Icaught a virus that attacked my heart and sent me to the hospital, where I wasdiagnosed with heart failure and put on the transplant list. I survived andended up not needed a new heart. When I returned home, a cat named Paolo keptcatching my eye, as he was featured on MEOW Cat Rescue's website, where Ivolunteer. His bravery during surgery for a concave ribcage inspired me towrite a children's book about him; a portion of the net proceeds benefits MEOW Cat Rescue.

Q: What are common mistakes authors make?

A: The common mistakes I've seenauthors make is waiting for media to approach them, instead of being proactive.With today's technology, authors need to have a website, a Facebook page andnot be afraid to contact media and ask to be interviewed. It's a lot of work,but definitely worth it!

Q: What are your greatest obstacles and motivators when it come to writing?

A: The greatest obstacle in writingI've come across is getting my name as an author out in the public. Unless anauthor starts out with a name that is recognizable, there is a lot of rejectionbefore you find someone willing to take a chance with you. My greatestmotivators are my readers - the last person who read my book to their three andfive year old children told me the next morning the two got up, found 'Paolo'sAdventures' and wanted it read to them first thing in the morning! The othermotivator is MEOW Cat Rescue. What a great feeling it is to know you helped acat have a forever home.

Q: What is your favorite memory in your career as a writer?

A: My favorite memory in my writingcareer so far was being interviewed by KOMO 4 News. I had a book signing atMEOW Cat Rescue and MEOW had sent a press release about the event to KOMO. Thenews channel didn't reply, so MEOW thought they weren't going to cover thestory. I was signing a book, when I looked up and there was a man with a hugecamera!

Q: What do you think about self-publishing?

A: I am self-published, so I thinkit's a very good alternative to the standard way of sending in manuscripts topublishing companies. With self-publishing, the writer is in charge of allaspects of the book. My friend (whom I've known since the first grade), BetsySchairer, is now an artist and I asked her to be the illustrator. This may nothave happened with traditional publishing, where they choose the illustratorfor the book. It was so interesting and rewarding to work with a friend inpublishing a book.

MaryHitchcock Cone is a fiction writer specializing in short stories and mysterynovels. She began writing in mid-life while on staff with the Trust for PublicLand and Nature Conservancy. In 1997 Mary joined a Marin County–based writinggroup inspired by author Anne Lamott, whose members met weekly to share andcritique their original fiction works.

Mary was married for fifty-three years to the late RussellCone, a journalist for the San Francisco Examiner, and raised twodaughters. She instilled in her children the idea that living a life of meaningis an art. Mary currently resides in Sacramento, California. Q: Why don't we start by having you tell us about the writer's group you belong to?

A: I was very fortunate to belong to awriting group in Larkspur, California, for almost eleven years. The members —students of author and writing teacher Anne Lamott — were very enthusiasticabout Ms. Lamott’s honest approach to writing. We focused on bringing storiesto life and supported each other to get our work into print.

Q: How long did you belong to this group, howdid you find them, why did you join, and what was the process of becoming amember?

A: I was a member from 1997 to 2009, until Imoved to Sacramento, California. The members had been students in a writingcourse taught by author Anne Lamott. When the course ended, Ms. Lamott advisedthem to form a writing group, which they did. Shortly thereafter, I met one ofthe members at a writing conference, and was invited to join. I was thrilledand it turned out to be a significant experience.

Q: Where did you meet? How often? What didyou do there?

A: We met religiously every Wednesdayevening at 5:30 p.m. at the local bookstore called Book Passage. We eventuallyarrived at a format that worked — taking turns reading and editing ten pageseach week. I think we lasted so long, as my writing buddies would say, becauseof “our love of writing and the intricate process of working a piece to itsfullest incarnation, along with a willingness to leave egos at the door.” Whena member had a big work, like a novel or collection of short stories, we wouldmeet for a longer working session.

Q: What was your path to publication?

A: I had just finished getting feedback on acollection of my short stories from the writing group, when a family friend,Karen Pierce Gonzales (who owns a small publishing company called FolkHeartPress) said she was looking for new material. She asked me to send her my shortstories, liked them, and produced my first book in December 2011. It was a teameffort: my daughters Chris, a book editor, and Lucinda, an artist, prepared themanuscript and book cover design, a family friend and prepress pro formatted thebook, and Karen is handling promotion and distribution. The book is called MooseMash and Other Stories, http://www.moosemash.com/

Q: What advice would you give for aspiringauthors?

A: What they say is true: Write about whatyou know. And I would add: Write about what you love. Writing is really aboutchipping away the lies and half truths to get to the heart of a story. Being honestand patient with yourself and working with a trusted group of fellow writersare key to discovering a story that rings true to the reader.

Q: Tell us a bit about your passions inlife.

A: My greatest passion was my late husbandRuss, to whom I was married for fifty-three years. We were lucky to be in loveall our married life. I am passionate about my two daughters and feel blessedto be a parent of such remarkable people. Writing is, of course, a greatpassion; I’ve always been fascinated by the compelling humanity withinseemingly ordinary lives. I also love to travel, swim, and play music.

Moving to a Rural Location?

Tips for making a tree change include knowing what to do in the fireseason, being wary of snakes, knowing to adjust for country driving and getinvolved with your local community.

If you have decided to make the big moveout to live in the country then there are a few things you should be awareof. Other than finding a reputable removalist company to transport all yourpossessions and furniture to your new home, you should also be aware thatliving in a rural area can be very different from living in the city. Don't forget that your new home will need tohave home and contentsinsurance.

Fire season

You need to be aware that when living in arural area the fire season can be a potential threat to your property. If you live near bushland or even if you areon a farm, you can still be susceptible to bush fires. Protect your property by getting ready forfire season. Have a plan, clear allflammable materials away from around your home and pack an emergency survivalkit.

Snakes

Snakes are a common sight in the bush andon rural properties. They will tend toget out of your way, so you don't usually see them much, but you can comeacross them unexpectedly. There are manypoisonous snakes in Australia, so if you see one stay right away. Careful when going through long grass andavoid having things like piles of wood close to the house, as well as leavingwater around, which snakes are attracted to.

Water supply

Sometimes you can be on town water when youlive on a rural property but sometimes you are too far out and need to haveyour own water supply. Having as manywater tanks as you can afford is a good idea. Try and have a tank for each building, so that you get the maximumcatchment off roofs, such as the roof of your house, any sheds or otherbuildings.

Gas bottles

You won't have access to gas serviceseither in a remote area so if you want to have gas you will need a large gastank, which the gas company will send around a gas tanker to fill every sooften.

Septic tanks

Your sewerage will also not be connected tothe main services that they have in a town so you will need a septic tank. These will need to emptied every now andthen, which you hire a professional company to do.

Driving

Driving in the country is very different todriving in the city. There are no streetlights and often roads are narrow. Youcould find that you need to do a lot of driving on gravel roads. Adjust to your new conditions, being extracareful until you become more used to country driving.

Post service

Note that some rural areas don't have apostal delivery service for properties in more remote areas. You will need a post office box at theclosest town, which is where you will have to go and collect your mail.

Rubbish bins

Unlike city dwellers you will find that youmight not have the luxury of a rubbish collection service. Little things that you do take for grantedare sometimes no available so don't be surprised if you have to dispose of yourown rubbish. This could mean having yourown tip, which is basically a large hole that you throw your rubbish in andeventually bury it. If you have a largerproperty you would make your tip a distance from the house.

Get to know your neighbours

The best thing you can do when living inthe country is make friends with your neighbours. It is good to have your neighbours there whenyou need help, plus if you are a long distance from town it is good to have theextra company.

Community

Another great thing to do is become a partof the community. Volunteer, attendcommunity events and become involved in what goes on around your local town.

I read (on the japanfs.org newsletter) that a heavy machinery manufacturer - Kawaski Heavy Industries Ltd - has been focusing on tidal power generation systems and was selected as one of the companies contracted to do research into ocean energy power generation via New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization.

Wave power has been around for quite some time - friends of ours once had a cabin on some property with a small creek that was used to power some of their electricity needs via a small machine that sat in the creek, absorbing the energy stored in the flow of the water itself. A few years ago we had a green energy expert come on our show to talk about desalination plants and wave energy plants. It is a low impact energy source that could very well supply most of the energy needs for coastal and river communities. Here in BC (Canada) a lot of our energy is generated from hydro power plants placed strategically along our fast moving rivers and some lake systems.

Toyota Industries Corp., one of the Toyota Group companies, announced that the members of "Yume no Kuruma Kobo," or "Dream Car Factory," have developed a compressedair-powered car.

This design looks like a funky three-wheeled eco-car, but does not require

Developing astrong networking system with reliable contacts is the key to any marketingplan – yet one of the most difficult and time consuming tasks that an authorwill face. While it is true that a contact list can take years to develop, ifdone correctly you will have a team of individuals across the globe who arehungry for news about you and who volunteer to share information about yourwork through their circles.

How does one goabout creating a contact list?

First you mustdecide whom you wish to work with and that requires much thought on key wordsto use in your searches and feeling out the industry to see where your workfits in. Once you have these initial steps done, you can begin approachingpeople that have a similar audience. But don’t just start sending query lettersin a willy-nilly fashion. Really think about how this particular outlet couldhelp you, who their audience is and how you can provide interesting tools ormaterial for them. This will get the attention of the owner/editor of theoutlet, however to really build a relationship you need to offer something –usually something greater or equal to what you are hoping to get from them.

When I approacha media outlet of any kind or an organization I want to network with I considerwhat their audience will get out of it AND let them know how I intend to drivetraffic their way. For instance, I would mention that I will promote the eventto my contacts via social networking sites, the Brummet’s Muse newsletter, ourBrummet’s Conscious Discussions Blog, the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio show, websites, forums, etc.

Remember to keepyour initial query email as brief as possible and don’t send along attachments.Write a paragraph or two and close with your signature and website address.Most magazine editors, for instance, give a letter less than 10 seconds perusaland if it doesn’t catch their attention it is trashed. Contact listscan be used again and again…

My contact listdid not get as strong as it is without a lot of effort, patience and time. Yousee, simply getting exposure with an organization’s newsletter (as an example)is not enough. That is just one little achievement. In my experience, the realbonus comes in over the next few years as you continually touch base with yourlist of contacts offering them new articles, new content, new resources, and soon. As the years go by I might use their websites or publications as resourcesin upcoming articles, I might mention their achievements or help promote theirevents through my blog or radio show.

Yet, just mentioningthem is not enough – you have to let them know about your efforts to promotetheir work too. So send a little note via email notifying them of the exposureyou have given them with a closing comment about how much you appreciate theirwork, or their support of you. This creates a working relationship with yourcontacts and pretty soon they are recommending guests for your radio show,resources for your blog, sending you websites that might increase publicity foryour work and so on. Perhaps the contacts you have will suggest exchangingpromotional materials, they may invite you to a variety of events or ask you tosupply an article… (like the one you are reading today) - the opportunities here are endless.

NOW you have aworking relationship with your contact list that you can continually refer tofor the rest of your career. The key to any marketing plan is developingrelationships – a strong support system like this can be relied on for theduration of your career. People you met 10 years ago will be there for you inthe future… and this is an encouraging feeling for an author who’s trying tostand out like a purple snowflake in a snowstorm of other authors.

Q: How doyour friends and family feel about your writing venture in general? (how haveyou handled the situation?)

A: Overallmy husband was pessimistic and unsupportive, saying that my chances of becominga published author were about the same as my becoming an astronaut. He has disliked me writing, which I’vecontinued to do in every spare moment I’ve had, while he plays golf, drinksbooze, watches telly and falls asleep on the sofa (bless him). But my daughter and her friends have always believedin my writing and spurred me on, as have my long-suffering mum and dad. However, through fear of disappointment andnot wanting to be pitied, I only ever confided in my closest friends about mydesire to be an author.

Q: What doyou do to unwind and relax?

A: To unwind,I play tennis at my local club. I’m notbrilliant at it, but sometimes I take part in a great rally - and I gain mostof my exercise from laughter prompted by the many funny moments I encounterwith other players. I only let myselfrelax when I get into bed at night.

Q: What isyour favorite book?

A: Angela’sAshes by Frank McCourt. It’s sobeautifully written. Even through yearsof poverty, hardship and tragedy, there is so much humor and charm to be found,seeing the world through the eyes of a child. He loves his imperfect family and has an indomitable spirit.

Q: What doyou want to accomplish with your books?

A: I’d loveto have Burglar Boy acknowledged and taken on by more libraries here in England,and in Canada and the United States. I’dlike to know I have entertained and moved people and provoked empathy for an unlovedcharacter that was drawn from real life. I want critical acclaim, - to reach sensitive souls and animal lovers –and have them keen to read my next novel.

Q: How long does it take you to write a completed book manuscript?

A: Years –because I only write during little snippets of spare time. I have worked as a teaching assistant andprivate tutor, but this year I have to devote most of my time to qualifying asa teacher at Brunel University. My nextmanuscript is pretty much complete but it needs fine-tuning – and that couldprobably take me months and months. It’sso frustrating having to leave it on a shelf untouched for days at a time!

Q: Whatsuccesses has your current book done for you?

A: I guessit has raised my self-esteem somewhat, reading the reviews (eleven 5 star onAmazon.co.uk and thirteen 4 and 5 star on Goodreads). It sold out of the first print run withinweeks of being published at the end of May 2011 and it also pleased me to learnthat a few libraries had taken it on. However, having received no publicity beyond my local newspapers, in thegrand scheme of things my book has been a splash in the ocean and my life remainspretty much unchanged. Still wanting to prove my husband wrong, I hope that theebook version will sell on Smashwords.com at $4.99

Wenow have 115 gas-to-energy operations in North America; some were built for collecting gasses from existing and older landfill sites, others were built for collecting gas released from modern composting facilities.

One more was added inQuebec where a new facility is expected to produce enough electricity to power6,500 houses simply by collecting and reusing methane released from theSaint-Nicephore landfill – further reducing negative impacts on theenvironment.

Methane is at least 20 times more damaging to the environment thenC02… so facilities like these are an excellent way of removing this threat andchanging it to something society can benefit from. By reusing the gasses in this way, it reduces the amount of energy needed from other sources - like coal plants.

What Are My Degree Options for Classical Studies?

Most colleges and universitieswith Classical Studies departments offer a range of programs that students canchoose. This allows students to select the specific program that meets theneeds of their future academic and career goals. Before committing yourself toa Classical Studies program, you might want to consider the advantages anddisadvantages of your degree options.

Single major degree programsallow students to concentrate on their interests in Classical Studies. Studentsthat choose this option usually graduate with a Bachelors of Arts degree.Although the specific degree requirements vary from school to school, mostprograms require students to complete classes in either Greek or Latinlanguage, several courses on history, and several courses about Ancient Greekand Ancient Roman societies.

Many students find that they getthe best academic experience by combining their Classical Studies major withanother concentration. For instance, a student might earn a dual major degreein Classical Studies and history, Classical studies and sociology, or ClassicalStudies and linguistics. Many Classics departments have recognized theadvantages of combining majors in this way, so they allow students to completetheir core requirements within the department while earning credits in othersubjects. This helps student focus on the academic issues that interest themmost. A student interested in Greek history, therefore, can take classes fromthe History department as well as the Classics department; a student interestedin Roman society can take courses from the Sociology department and theClassics department. Students that complete dual major degrees usually earnBachelors of Arts.

Students that want to committhemselves to other areas of study have the option to fulfill their interestsin ClassicalStudies by enrolling in minor programs. The course requirements for a minorare usually an abbreviated version of the major requirements. Instead of takinga lot of elective courses within the Classical Studies department, though,students focus on core classes that contribute that teach them the fundamentalsof Greek and Roman culture. In many cases, students choose to add a major totheir degree goals because they want to enhance their educations or show futureemployers (and graduate schools) that they can handle the higher demand ofcompleting a major and a minor instead of just focusing on one area of study.

According to the RecyclingProduct Newsletter (http://rpn.baumpub.com), Xerox Canada has designed a newprogram that allows consumers to recycle spent imaging supplies – Xerox is seenas a leader in the industry for sustainability and recycling programs for morethan a decade – averaging 5.5 million kilograms of recyclable waste per year.This new program is expected to divert as much as 673 thousand additionalkilograms of waste from landfills.
