Water

-- Quote of the Day --  “Even something seemingly innocuous as eating a better diet can make change because they start to think about the food and where it comes from and whether there were pesticides used, and they might look at purchasing organic foods, and then they may start to think about local farms, and then they might think about top soil and… they might think about the larger implications such as run off and dead zones. So what started out as a small change ended up being a multi-faceted change and then this impacts the people around them. …Sustainability is really the same thing as well-being – in the broadest sense of the term, for example people have adequate food and security… creative expression, meaningful jobs, contributing to others, having access to education, recreation, breathing clean air, drinking clean water, having the opportunity to see pristine nature, justice, and political empowerment… etc. …Being sustainable means making well ...

Conscious Society

-- Quote of the Day  -- “… Our society on a whole is in a huge transition. …What we’ve been working on in our school is helping young people realize why they want to have values in their life. When you do help other people, you do feel a joy inside – helping them find the meaning and value for their life. …It is a chaotic world to grow up in – but we can show kids that there are a lot of inspiring people out there, and that those values are inside themselves. …When children are given this, their natural learning tendencies come out. …[Teaching] isn’t just having kids memorize, or coercing them or threatening them – you really feel like you are communication with the person. Would you rather spend your time learning about things that have no meaning, or would you rather learn about generosity and other life skills? …Education is just upside down, people are blind to the fact that if you try to push kids in this direction you get alienation, you get sad...

Downsizing...

-- Quote of the Day -- “…Where I live, the second smallest county in Florida, but we have something like 3300 people per square mile. …And the traffic shows that – it is a chore to get from point A to point B if you drive, it’s a little easier and a lot more pleasant if you ride your bicycle. …I’m a practical cyclist, I’m not a racer – but I enjoy the mob of bikes I have in the garage. …We looked at absolutely everything in every room – what doesn’t need to be plugged in? …looking for appliances without digital clocks; putting things on power-strips; if I’m not on the computer it is unplugged from the wall… and doing things like this we got our power bill from over a hundred a month to thirty. …We are going to have to downsize on a personal level; you’re not going to be driving everywhere like we are now, you might not want to take the job that is 30 miles from your home; or drive across town for that special coffee you like. …The real question is: what is the no-oil susta...

Environment - resources & discussion

-- Quote of the Day -- “… There are ions in nature, negative ions are actually the good ones. You know when you go outside after a rain and there is this feeling in the air – that is the negative ions. …And you know when you walk across the carpet and you get a shock? Well, that is positive ions. When you walk on a carpet of natural materials, you won’t get that effect. …What else brings negative ions? - Water features and plants. …Sweet Briar Nature Center developed the butterfly house to educate people about the destruction of the rain forest and our natural habitat. …What few people realize is that butterflies will need certain plants to feed from… and certain plants for laying their eggs on. They are very specific as to the species… so if the habitat is severely decreased, that butterfly will not survive .” ~ Maureen Calamia  Today's quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio show episode that aired back on – March 13 - titled: Sweetbriar Nature Cente...

Proactive, Positive Living

-- Quote of the Day -- “ Before we get to the edge of the waterfall we need to stop and think about how we need to live… We have all these debates about whether there is global warming and so we don’t pass legislation. ...Russia had a huge heat wave and lost most of their grain harvest, and so they are exporting zero now. And then you get a country like Egypt who is their biggest customer, and they give bread to their poor – last year they couldn’t give out bread so they had rioting. …One might say 'well that might happen there, but not where [countries] are more developed.' But remember the truck strike in London when in just 4 days the grocery stores ran out of food – that strike got settled pretty quickly.   …Then comes the day you go to the market and there is no fish - well we can’t wait for that day .”     ~ Stuart Rose ~ Aug 17 2010 Today's quote comes from an interview with Stuart Rose who dropped in to the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio show to talk ...
