Leaving Baggage At The Door

Leaving Baggage At The Door * Today's powerful article was written by Rich Walters, I found it through a connection online who shared the piece in a FB group we are both members of. Upon reaching out to Rich, I attained permission to share this amazing article here today. Find Rich on FaceBook or TheRealRichWalters.com This starts my 22nd year of teaching middle school. Yesterday was quite possibly one of the most impactful days I have ever had. I tried a new activity called “ The Baggage Activity ”.  I asked the kids what it meant to have baggage and they mostly said it was hurtful stuff you carry around on your shoulders. I asked them to write down on a piece of paper what was bothering them, what was heavy on their heart, what was hurting them, etc. No names were to be on a paper. They wadded the paper up, and threw it across the room. They picked up a piece of paper and took turns reading out loud what their classmate wrote. After a student read a paper, I asked who wrote that

Author Interview

World of Writing  -  Author Interview It is wonderful to have another Kootenay-based author join our blog for a World of Writing interview. Today we have the honour of interviewing fellow Canadian author Tanya Christenson - a teacher and elementary school counsellor who, like Dave and I, resides in Creston (BC). She is also a mom and stepmom to five children and most recently loves being Nanny to two grandchildren. She and her husband enjoy life in their home on the mountain with their two yellow labs. Tanya is the first-time author of the recently released young-adult novel -  A Soft Place to Fall (Red Deer Press - Oct 27, 2021). Tanya invites our readers to drop by her website to access alist of teacher resources to help with difficult childhood experiences: www.tanyachristenson.com or visit her at Facebook & Instagram @tan.christenson. Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?    I always wanted to be a teacher. My mom operated a daycare centre in our home, so

Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day  ©BrummetMedia.ca " He therefore slipped off everywhere,  to the right and to the left;  he climbed over into every vale that hid itself behind a hill;  he visited the pierced shadow-projection of every row of trees;  he laid himself down at the feet of a more than commonly beautiful flower,  and refreshed himself with pure love by its spirit,  without breaking its body;  he was the travelling-companion of the powdered butterfly,  and observed his burying himself in his flower,  and the hedge-sparrow  he followed through the bushes to her brooding-cell and nursery;  he let himself be spell-bound in the circle which a bee drew around him,  and quietly suffered himself to be immured in the shaft of his own nosegay;  he exercised upon every village  which the motley landscape held up to him the right of way,  and loved best to meet the children,  whose days played even like his hours... But men, he avoided."  ~ Jean Paul Friedrich Richter ; Hesperus, or Forty-Fi

Fork and Beans

Fork and Beans  They say early experiences affect who we become as mature adults, and perhaps in my case - it just might be true. My first baking experiences were in my mother's kitchen where my biscuits were requested often. Occasionally during the summer months I was engaged as a volunteer at a large industrial kitchen where my mother worked, and learned a few tricks of the trade there under the guidance of the head cook. I recall the steamy heat of the place, way too many dirty dishes and a small table where the exhausted staff could gather to share stories and rest. Later, as a young adult I had the pleasure of working for a year as a pastry cook in a busy restaurant, and all those tricks I learned in my youth sure came in handy! I'd like to share one of those baking tricks with you today.  There's nothing like the comforting decadence of a beautiful slice of pie. Store bought shells can be laden with lard and preservatives, come with excess packaging, are shallow and a

At every stage in your writing career, you need to have the motivation and self-discipline to learn what each step requires and then produce those items before actually taking on that stage. So if you are in the stage of querying your manuscript to a publisher, you would then take on the task of learning how to query publishers, how to find the right publisher for you, the best way to stand out and get noticed by a publisher, provide all the materials and information a publisher might want... all before you even consider querying a publisher. Be prepared... if you can prove that you are easy to work with, or

About this blog...

Brummet's Conscious Blog began back in the day of MySpace - remember when that was the place to be? lol How things change. We moved over to Blogspot.com in 2008, and have been there ever since. Like most authors, the first traditional publisher that we worked with explained how important it was to create a blog - so we began this incredible 17-year journey based on that advice. When Dave and I made the decision to live and work as consciously as possible - this included using the blog as a tool to inspire proactive, positive change in the world. When you browse the blog it is easy to see that this focus, this theme is reflected in the colours we chose, the content we publish, the imagery we use, the types of extra pages we create and what we include in the sidebars. You'll find articles on green living, reducing waste, saving money, writing industry, business and leadership advice, self-help articles, poetry, gardening tips and much more. You'll also find several genre-spe
