the art of business

-- Quote of the Day --

“…When you are passionate and really love what you do you can really transform your life and radiate this energy to others. …Now, is a great time to try to go after your dreams. …We do a lot of give-aways and really neat things for a variety of groups, but one of the tricks to our success (is doing things like) renting a little sedan to take a customer to an event that was a chance of a lifetime for her. …Think of how that made me feel – there is just no better feeling. …you don’t think that the word trickles down to your employees when you do something like this? And then they start to do this with their clients. …Those little things make the biggest difference in the world in growing your business from nothing to amazing. …I joined Entrepreneur’s Organization; we would literally get around a table and each month a person would be in charge of talking about their company and we would be able to make suggestions and learn from them. That was very helpful in being able to transform me and grow my business.

~ Nov 3, ’09 – Randy Cohen

Today's quote was excerpted from the Seeing the Amazing in Everything episode of the Conscious Discussions talk radio show - which aired back on November 3rd, 2009. Check out the archived interview by selecting the hyper-linked show title (above).

Well I've just finished posting the MySpace Blog, which offers our readers a "week at a glance" into our scheduled appearances, interviews, guests on our radio shows and more. We also list our events a "month at a glance" through BookTour. Click on the hyperlinks here to see these sites.

People have been so very kind during the last 6 weeks while we have dealt with long-distance care-giving issues and then the subsequent loss of my terminally ill parents. Eight family members came out to our hometown to spend more time with us and to go through family photos, etc for a few days - and then all the appointments, traveling to surrounding communities and official paperwork fell into our laps. Whew!

After all this we spent a couple of weeks playing "catch-up" with house and office work and are only now starting to feel like we are getting back on our feet. Unfortunately the lease is also due on our car soon so we were busily dealing with this for a few days. Our favorite place to go is AM Ford in Trail where we have always experienced exceptional and personal service. These guys really do go the extra mile for their customers, and we've been with them for years.

In the meantime I've been invited to appear on several radio shows in the upcoming months and have been making arrangements for those. Our e-book series project for Trash Talk was delayed due to all the personal issues we are currently facing. However we are just around the corner from releasing the first book in this series - do keep an eye out for announcements on this. We will also be offering affiliate opportunities for our 3 books in the upcoming months. If you are interested in this, simply email us via our site:

The Brummet's Muse Newsletter will be going out later today as well. I'm heading over to the site in a few minutes to get the newsletter out to you all later today. If you are not already subscribed to the newsletter, sign up via the widget on this blog, or on our site:

Please do feel free to spread the word about our blogs, newsletters, books, radio shows and free resources that we offer on our site... or recommend our work to your friends on social networking sites.

Dylan Morgan resides in Norway although he was born in New Zealand and raised in the United Kingdom. He tells us that he “writes during those rare quiet moments amid a hectic family life: after dark, with limited sustenance, and when his creative essence is plagued the most by tormented visions.” His debut novel, Hosts, has garnered positive reviews and his recently released novella, October Rain, was inspired by a dream about space. In this novella, mankind teeters on the brink of extinction in a solar system choking under the glare of a dying sun. Marketing & Innovative Business

-- Quote of the Day --

“…If you are unemployed you need to treat each 8 hour day as a work day – your job is to look for work. Join a job club and volunteer – business people volunteer in these organizations and you might work beside someone who works for a company that is hiring, you just never know. Learn something new every single day – no one wants to hire someone who is stagnant and reconnect with your contacts.”

Statistics reveal that 85% of the people out there who have never played an instrument would have loved the opportunity to play one …There is a great resource out there called Support Music ( – teaches people how to go about promoting music in the community. …National Association of Music Merchants ( also has a foundation that supports musicians and teachers… And Little Kids Rock ( is another foundation that provides resources, instruments and support to teachers. …I would say that there are a number of books that show that playing music affects a child’s mind as far as learning ability. …(Music therapy is being) used for Autism, Down Syndrome and also Alzheimer’s. …I remember playing in a band at New Year’s Eve, and we finished a song and a friend of the family walks up and says ‘I can’t believe this, This kid doesn’t say anything for 15 years and now he’s singing a song up on stage!’ …Music helped me in coming out of my shell and becoming more comfortable, in working with a team …leadership, salesmanship and branding, giving the fans what they want, creativity and innovation, individuality and passion.”

I received the notice (excerpt below) from the Waste Recycling News org. about the area known as: Alameda County, California (USA), where stiff fines are in place for individuals who neglect to separate green waste from their regular trash.

"The county, this month, began enforcement of a landfill ban of plant debris that carry fines of $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense and $500 for the third offense within a year, the county said. The ban was put into place early last year, but fines have been delayed until this year, according to StopWaste.Org, the Alameda County Solid Waste Management Authority. Warnings were issued throughout 2009... in an effort to reach its waste diversion goal of 75% this year."

It is a little sad that we require fines and regulations to make us sort our waste and put it in the proper place. However, as we've seen with littering, fines do encourage complacent individuals to participate. Simply place yard waste in green organics carts along with food scraps and soiled paper for collection - or contribute to your own compost pile. Those materials will be collected and composted.

Keep a compost bucket (i.e. reuse an ice cream bucket with a tight-fitting lid) in the kitchen for all the organics that come from that room alone - even a relatively unused kitchen will produce a surprising amount of organic waste ...think of debris that falls in the sink, coffee grounds and crumbs in the empty bread bag or the crumbled remains in the bottom of a cereal box.

In the last 4.5 years in this house we’ve replaced every single appliance with energy efficient ones (hot water tank, laundry machines, freezer, fridge…) and are considering a furnace in the near future. It is a large investment, however our older furnace is far from efficient. The new ones have a higher energy performance standard then ever before… According to Terasen Gas – “the national standard, set by the Government of Canada… through the BC Energy efficiency Act requires that all replacement gas-fired central forced air furnaces achieve at least a 90% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating.”

Of course, this purchase cannot be done for quite a while – we just can’t afford it. However there are many things we can do to make the existing furnace run more efficiently. Clean filters is a biggie, we purchased a reusable filter that we clean every 6 weeks or so – rather than having a disposable one that gets tossed in the garbage. Having the furnace cleaned every couple of years and serviced every single year is a good idea as well. Keep the meter clear of ice and snow, if ice builds up call your gas dealer to take care of it. Check the vent to the outside to ensure that it is not blocked - and clean away any dust-balls near the furnace regularly.

The Arts

-- Quote of the Day --

"Above all, we are coming to understand that the arts incarnate the creativity of a free people. When the creative impulse cannot flourish, when it cannot freely select its methods and objects, when it is deprived of spontaneity, then society severs the root of art."

~ John Fizgerald Kennedy

The ScotiaBank Group put out a 2010 calendar this year that celebrated the various volunteer heros on their staff – they also decided to print this year’s calendar on Rolland ST50 – “which is manufactured in Canada …is ecologo and FSC certified and made with 5% post consumer waste using methane biogas energy collected from a landfill – supplying the mill with 92% of its energy needs” Terasen Gas also prints their information inserts and bills on FSC paper – which means the paper comes from well-managed forests, controlled sources and recycled wood or fiber. Dave and I would like to congratulate their wonderful conscious living initiatives.

Today's featured author on Authors Read radio is Janie Suss, author of Oscar and Olive Osprey: A Family Takes Flight. Janie has always been fascinated by the wildlife in her area, particularly ospreys. She built a platform at the end of her pier and sure enough, a family of birds settled in. Inspired by her feathered friends, Janie wrote a children’s book about the importance of families. With real photographs of her birds, she shows how each member of the families plays their part. This book also reminds children to look beyond TV sets and computer screens to the lessons that can be learned from nature. Oscar and Olive Osprey - A Family Takes Flight is an exceptional hardcover book with glossy pages filled with photos.

Slow Down & See Waste as a Resource

-- Quote of the Day --

“…Advertising is very invasive in our lives right now it is getting harder to discern between news and advertising – it takes time to sort out what is new information and when we are being sold. And this creates a sense of discontentment with our lives… and if we are not aware of the influence of this we can be caught up in it. Such as being identified by brand… and we are working too hard to keep up with the things that identify us in this world. …The stress that this creates is overwhelming - to feel like you are not enough. …I have clients that I’ve asked to go on a magazine fast – when they stop looking at the things that are larger than life, better than anything could be because it is produced, then they begin to feel OK about where they are and their identity becomes about WHO they are. …When we get a sense of things are not OK is to …go and buy stuff because we are not connected to our own psychological strength, so that we can be more discerning about what is happening.”

Networking & E-books

-- Quote of the Day --

“…‘Networking’ is defined as building a mutual beneficial relationship. I try to teach people that just because the tools have changed, the way human beings are wired in our heads is the same. …In order for this to work, it can’t just be about me. …If I make it all about myself, people will see through that and will not make time for it. But if I take pride in helping others, people are going to want to be a part of that. A ‘Brand’ is something you are known for – it is a promise… it is what you are known for. A brand is a tangible - it can be intentional or intentional, and a brand can be negative.”

Thank you all for the incredible out-pouring of condolences and well-wishes during this time of family tragedy. We have been so moved by your kind and thoughtful letters, emails and messages. The family is doing better, handling this difficult issue very well despite the raw emotions - and we, Dave and I, hope to be back in the office for you all by Jan 11th.

In the meantime I'm trying to keep up with the emails as I have time, please allow me time to get to your messages while I play catch-up in the office thru to the middle of January.

Well, I'm 40 now... the big FOUR-O - which has me feeling a little differently, that is for sure. all the birthdays ending in O tend to have a big impact on me... the others not so much. :) Well, I've got to rush off again - appointments and duties call - I will, however, be back in the office almost daily now and will be back to normal by Jan 15th.

In sincere appreciation, Lillian
