The Arts

-- Quote of the Day --

"Above all, we are coming to understand that the arts incarnate the creativity of a free people. When the creative impulse cannot flourish, when it cannot freely select its methods and objects, when it is deprived of spontaneity, then society severs the root of art."

~ John Fizgerald Kennedy

The ScotiaBank Group put out a 2010 calendar this year that celebrated the various volunteer heros on their staff – they also decided to print this year’s calendar on Rolland ST50 – “which is manufactured in Canada …is ecologo and FSC certified and made with 5% post consumer waste using methane biogas energy collected from a landfill – supplying the mill with 92% of its energy needs” Terasen Gas also prints their information inserts and bills on FSC paper – which means the paper comes from well-managed forests, controlled sources and recycled wood or fiber. Dave and I would like to congratulate their wonderful conscious living initiatives.

Today's featured author on Authors Read radio is Janie Suss, author of Oscar and Olive Osprey: A Family Takes Flight. Janie has always been fascinated by the wildlife in her area, particularly ospreys. She built a platform at the end of her pier and sure enough, a family of birds settled in. Inspired by her feathered friends, Janie wrote a children’s book about the importance of families. With real photographs of her birds, she shows how each member of the families plays their part. This book also reminds children to look beyond TV sets and computer screens to the lessons that can be learned from nature. Oscar and Olive Osprey - A Family Takes Flight is an exceptional hardcover book with glossy pages filled with photos.

Earlier this morning I was surprised by some switchboard issues and scrambled for the contingency show - I read from my book of poetry - Towards Understanding.
