Protect our Forests

Protect our Forests

I came across some very interesting tree related topics, two of which I felt needed to be shared on this blog.

The first one is an article from ScienceTimes.com that reveals there are hundreds of millions of hectares of land available for planting and if that was done, that amount of reforesting would erase 100 years of carbon emissions (sciencetimes.com), cutting current carbon emissions by 25%. Good news, potentially... here's the ARTICLE

Yet the burning of existing forests continue at a horrendous rate and out pace current replanting efforts. One can take a browse online and find that there are hundreds of tree-planting and land remediation/reclamation organizations that are ramping up efforts and improving rivers, lakes, planting millions of trees annually... thanks to all the individuals out there supporting their work and all the volunteers too. Sadly, fires are all too often caused by careless humans. I've personally witnessed a camper pile all their fire wood on, pack up, and leave. Leaving the wood for someone else would have been considered thoughtful. However, abandoning it was really poor. I didn't get a picture or a licence plate but we went over and took care of their fire ourselves.

Sadly over one long weekend in BC (Canada) alone, campers abandoned 32 fires over the BC Day long weekend (according to cbc.ca) so it is clear that some people do not value the forests… Here is the news STORY

So be careful out there. Pick up litter, especially glass and metal that can get hot and reflective and cause fires. Make sure every campfire pit is cold. Pack extra water when you travel. Don't park your vehicle in dry grassy terrain where hot pipes and engines can spark fires. Don't throw cigarettes (or blunts - joint ends) out; animals mistake them for food and feed their babies the butts. Everyone suffers. Be wise.
