-- Quick Writing Tip # 3 --

  • Be prepared.
At every stage in your writing career, you need to have the motivation and self-discipline to learn what each step requires and then produce those items before actually taking on that stage. So if you are in the stage of querying your manuscript to a publisher, you would then take on the task of learning how to query publishers, how to find the right publisher for you, the best way to stand out and get noticed by a publisher, provide all the materials and information a publisher might want... all before you even consider querying a publisher. Be prepared... if you can prove that you are easy to work with, organized, quick to respond, you've reduced their workload and have done all this while being very respectful - they are going to look at you more seriously.

Sending queries out to members of the media is almost a daily task for writers. Whether you are querying to see if they'll accept article submissions as a free lance writer, sending press releases to newspapers, or if you are querying for interviews... you'll be writing different types of query letters regularly. This interview with Johnathan Maxwell and I cover topics from literacy to bookstores, poetry to resumes, genres of writing and ways to improve query and submission communications. This talk radio show is no longer on air, but the archived episode can be found here:
