Just For Writers !!

This series was put together in an effort to supply support and information to people new to the world of writing. Watch for a new post in this series around the middle of every month !! *Note: these links go back as far as early 2000's and may refer to our old website and other old links. Today  let's start off with an article written by Aileen Lopez re: the power of poetry, that was published on this blog back in 2012:

Online Social Networking writer's groups can often be seen as a time-waster, the sometimes dull task of scrolling through dozens of posts published per hour on each group.

However, we do take the time to visit our favourite groups every few weeks, or more frequently if our schedule allows. Take a few extra coffee breaks (or wine) while browsing the various topics covered over the last week or two. Gather the pets around your feet or lap and make it a cozy experience. Choose rainy and poor weather days, and times when your mind is not energetic enough to write.

We often discover several new contacts to network with, sometimes these connections are strong influencers.  We'll also discover a new trick, tip or resource. You also never know what you might learn; after 2.5 decades in this realm of writing, I find I learn something new all the time. For instance in one FB writers group a "newbie" posted a question about building an author platform to launch their book release from. There were some very interesting responses:

Author Carman Baka suggested using Amazon's Vella platform. "You post your story piece by piece (similar to a television series) and readers pay to unlock each episode. I just started last month and really like it."

Writer Lisa Vitanza shared that she creates graphics, images of scenes from her books and includes captions, short stories or teaser excerpts.

-- Quick Writing Tip  --

  • Be Polite

While it may seem ridiculous to suggest this as most of us might say to ourselves " "well, that is a given." However, I have to say that as a member of the media, I have had many experiences where connections forgot to say a simple thank you, they did not make noticeable efforts to provide everything I needed, they did not leave a comment on their post or make a noticeable effort to promote their interaction with us. Most people do their best to promote and be polite, but sometimes forget these simple things.

I close every email with "in appreciation, Lillian." and I mean every word. I AM very appreciative. Write after an event and tell them how the experience felt to you, responses or feedback you have encountered, how grateful you are they took the time out of their busy schedule for you. Make the effort to promote each and every little bit of exposure, coverage or mention you may receive... and let them know you have promoted the heck out of it. It is not just your words, but your actions, that count.
