Protect Ground-Nesting Birds

Columbia Basin Trust puts out this really inspiring e-newsletter and in one of these they had this to say about what we called Conscious Clean Walking in our Trash Talk series:

Protect Ground-Nesting Birds

Care for fragile ecosystems by keeping dogs leashed

Did you know that April through July is breeding season for many species of ground-nesting birds, including Oregon's state bird, the western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta)?

As you hit the trails this summer, we encourage you to keep your dog on leash and obey all posted rules to protect these birds. Other reminders for recreating responsibly include not trampling flowers or plants, packing out all waste (including dog poop!), and brushing off your boots before and after a hike to help prevent the spread of invasive weeds.
