business contracts

Basic contracts are very easy to do and are so important to the business. This paperwork can be used to prove business activities when it comes to the accountant, taxes and write-offs.

Contracts are especially important if you are working with a partner - in this case you need to have a signed, written agreement as to who will take on specific responsibilities listing job duties and expectations clearly.

Contracts will also explain how the relationship, or the business, will be dissolved should the partnership go haywire. In this situation, the paperwork acts like a prenuptial agreement... protecting everyone involved.

Writers deal with contracts on a regular basis. If a free-lance writer sells an article, a contract is signed stipulating the duration of time that publication retains publishing rights (usually 3 months after publication) and it will detail both how and when the writer will be paid.

If the writer is donating to a fundraiser or offering their book as a door prize, a signed piece of paper acts like a receipt and you can claim those donated books, products or gift certificates on your taxes. *At the very least, print the email communication so that you have that paper trail.

If you are dealing with retail outlets that have agreed to stock your product, a contract is essential. Each retail outlet will require a specific discount and may require that the contract be amended in some way.

Here is a sample of the contract we use for retailers selling our books:
