Publicist Berlin Malcom connected with me re: her clients - Tamara Thorne and Alistair Cross both grew up writing and reading ghost stories and they have no intention of stopping. Their childhoods were spent trying to scare other children and later, snooping around allegedly haunted houses to see if anything might pop up and say ‘boo.’ Both previously published, they joined forces in 2012 and have since penned the successful Gothic serialized novel, The Ghosts of Ravencrest, as well as their debut collaborative novel, The Cliffhouse Haunting. They are currently working on their next project.

Q: What have you learned about working with your co-writer?

A: We have learned that picking the right collaborator is vital for true success. If you have any qualms about someone who approaches you concerning a mutual project, listen to your instincts and act accordingly. A collaboration like the one we have is energizing, fun and productive. That’s why we do it over and over.

Q: What were some of the challenges you faced in writing your books?
A: It’s always important to build your world and characters, but even more so in a collaboration because you both have to know every detail or you may go in different directions. Also, both writers must be equally invested in the storyline. If you’re going to write a book, you’ll be spending a lot of time there. You both must love what you’re doing.

Q: How do you collaborate?

A: Working together is a dream come true. We have very similar sensibilities both in writing and in life. As we write together in the Cloud each day, we always enjoy seeing that our editorial instincts mirror one another. So many collaborations fall apart due to emotions and ego - our union is peaceful, productive, and respectful, and we don’t take it for granted.

Q: What are some of your favorite writers’ resources?

A: We are both avid readers. Books never let you down. Also, going out and observing the world is a great resource. The Internet is also a godsend, as long as you make sure the sites you visit have legitimate information. And history - that is the greatest resource of all.

Q: Tell us about your journey to publication… (How long have you been writing? Why did you decide to pursue writing?)

A: Tamara approached an agent with her first book back in 1990 and it sold quickly and was followed by many more. Alistair first sold in 2012. As a team, we have been published since 2014 and have many more upcoming novels. We also continue to write solos.

Q: Who are your favorite authors?
A: We both read extensively and eclectically. Tamara favors Ray Bradbury, Nelson DeMille and Stephen King. Alistair is partial to Edgar Allan Poe.
