-- Product Review --
Vitamin D3 is
officially known as cholecalciferol, nicknamed
the "sunshine vitamin" since
the body naturally produces it when exposed to the sun. Aside from exposure to sunlight, you can also
obtain Vitamin D3 by eating certain foods, such as mushrooms, fish, eggs, and
milk products fortified with the vitamin.
Vitamin D3 is a crucial
nutrient for overall health – especially in areas that have long winter
periods, people who use a lot of sunscreen products and those who spend a lot
of time indoors. Even though the body is capable of manufacturing Vitamin D3
from the UVB rays of sunlight, millions of individuals are deficient in this nutrient.
Vitamin D is involved in many aspects of good health from maintaining muscles,
bones, teeth and immune system, to emotional issues and skin problems.
I was quite excited
to have the opportunity to review Zahler's
supplemental doses of this critical vitamin. We started the discussion for this
project around July 22nd and we picked up at the US border on August 3rd. It arrived in a 9”
wide X 11” long yellow bubble envelope with no additional packaging.
The white plastic bottle
had a safety seal covering the screw-top cap, which wasn’t perforated so I had
to use a razor knife to remove it. Sadly there was a bar code sticker over part
of the label obstructing my ability to read the product information – preferably
that sticker could have been placed on the bottle where the label ended
instead. When I removed that sticker, part of the label came up with it, but I
could read some of the information it contained.
These easy to swallow
soft-gel capsules are quickly absorbed by the body, and are manufactured and
packaged in a state of the art GMP certified facility. The
directions on the bottle recommend that we
take only 1 capsule per day per person, with meals. It is recommended to store
with the cap screwed on well to keep a good seal, in cool, dry place (I use my
bread cupboard). Each bottle contains 120 capsules (so that is roughly 4 months
worth for one individual per bottle; 2 months worth for us, as a married
couple). One capsule contains 5000 IU of Vitamin D3.
This product is free of
gluten, soy, lactose – but does contain corn, MCT oil, kosher gelatin,
vegetable glycerin, and purified water. It is a made in the US and distributed
by Advanced Nutrition by Zahler (based
in Brooklyn New York - USA). The company produces many products from parasite cleanse
and yeast infection aids to various nutrients, immune support and even a panic
attack/stress/anxiety formula (which I would love to try). Visit the company’s
site at: zahlers.com
I saw most of their
products were listed on Amazon.ca for Canadians… except this one. However it is
available on Amazon.com where it is listed with a retail price of $19.95 (US),
but is currently on sale for $12.97 (US).
