Host Carol Hanson has a very interesting discussion with Thrift Plus on her Awesome Women Spotlight, covering how thrift stores are addressing the pile of used clothing being sent to landfills or incinerators.

I remember when my mom would get plus-sized clothing from the thrift stores and use the material to make new clothes, aprons, rugs, blankets or whatever she needed. She, too, used her quilting craft for a family legacy.

She made a quilt for my brother to celebrate his travels and stories he shared with her. She did one for a few of her grandkids too, before she became too ill (she passed in 2010).

There's an amazing thrift store locally who give household and clothing items to anyone in dire straits, such as those running from an unsafe home or their house burned down or some other disaster. The Trinity Thrift Store raise funds for the church and it's projects such as the free lunch they provide once a week, to support seasonal fruit pickers, farm workers, seniors and the like. They help out the food bank, the women's shelter, people affected by tragedy and more with the money they raise from donated items. I asked the manager, a friend and neighbour of mine, what they did with things that don't sell. They sometimes do "free" bins or "free book" days, etc when they have too much of any item. Unsold clothing is sent to the fabric recycling facilities. They don't have enough volunteers to cut squares, take off buttons and zippers, or make rags out of unsellable or unsold clothing, which is kind of sad. They do participate in a local thrift store collaboration - all the unsold clothing is sent to companies that grind it up and use it for other products like carpet padding.

This next resource comes to us from Carol Hanson's podcast episode focused on the topic of used clothing, greening the fashion industry and the efforts of this UK based  https://thrift.plus/ were making in reducing the number of clothes heading to the landfill or burned. They figured out a creative and innovative way to resell clothing more efficiently, helping individuals extend their budgets while raising funds for charity. ...Every country needs one of these organizations - hopefully, Thrift.plus will branch out to serve Canada soon!
