Manage A Writing Career

Just how do you manage a writing career?

Well, it begins with acknowledging that you are an entrepreneur and that it is time to run your office as a business.

You are en entrepreneur whether you are a:

Freelance writer

Copywriter

Editor, formatter, cover designer

Published author

Spoken word poet

Assignment writer

Branching out into multiple writing and media genres in order to keep a steady income flow

Have one book that you haven't published yet, but plan to.

Regardless of where you fit in all of that - you are running a business and before you go any farther it is really important to take a few days to understand your situation with a 5-year business plan.

The 5-year Business Plan has 2 sections; the first will touch on everything from:

Financial needs analysis and taxes

Operations, processes and policies

Examining future goals or projects

Understanding these things puts you in a better position going forward, including:

Being able to evaluate the current situation including your personal strengths, weaknesses and talents
Knowing where you are and what you have at your fingertips

Identifying potential and current challenges
Understanding tax prep and record keeping processes

This information is also essential for working on the second part of the 5-year business plan, which involves:

Contingency Plans
Succession Plans
And an Annual Action Plan

Business plans will evolve as time goes on, which is why we create 5-year plans that we will re-evaluate periodically.
