The Flying Scotsman Sings - book review

Two lovers who share a passion for music, but with differing schedules, travelling and careers - will their love survive?

It has been quite a while since I have written a book review article. There was a time when I was paid to write reviews and was assigned 300-600 books per year to analyze and review - sometimes write articles, sometimes writing blurbs, sometimes giving reader feedback. Back then I was reading so much that I ended up burning out after 5-6 years. I took a very long break, did a few reviews and took a very long break again.

I no longer accept book review queries, however I'm happy to share this book review with our readers today...

Upon first impression I had a strong feeling that I was about to delve into a fantastic read. As a writer, I was impressed at the enviable writing skills displayed in the first two pages where the author eloquently set the scene, described the era and introduced the main character.

Here, the author kept me entranced for several chapters with the anticipation of true love in a setting of performing musicians in both small smokey bars and large stages. A few chapters in, however I began feeling a bit bored wishing something exciting would happen.

The author gives the book a satisfactory conclusion, her ability to bring the era fully to the reader, and overall writing skill leads me to give this book a 3.5 star - 4 star rating (out of 5).

What I found most interesting is that she uses this book to tell a fictionalized tale of her grandparents' romance amongst an era of flappers, trains and cultural change. I believe she intends this to be a series.

Author Debbie Wastling hails fromYorkshire, UK, and is a writer of British historical novels and now lives in Los Angeles (USA). She started writing in high school when she wrote her first produced play, going on to direct over 75 musicals and plays and write new music.

Interestingly, Debbie is also a drummer, and runs the Arts Alive non-profit - where students play drums and other instruments. Dave (drumming husband of mine) and I hope to feature her project on the Drum It With Brummet blog in the near future.
