business advice

The best business advice I have shared with others is:

"Don’t make anyone work for anything;

provide everything they will need

so that they do not have to ask for it."

As an entrepreneur you really do need to be prepared for each action you intend to take. You have to keep motivated and have a steady level of self-discipline to learn what each step requires.

Let's look at the example of taking the book you have written to the publication stage. At this point you need to learn how to query your manuscript to a publisher. You'll research information on how to find the right publisher and you'll be looking at various publication options, deciding on the ones that suit your situation best. The next thing to pursue is attaining an understanding of what publishers want from potential authors. You'll also want to understand the publishing process so that if they decide to sign that contract, you will be ready for the next steps ahead of you.

Now, the best way to stand out and get noticed by a publisher is to provide all the materials and information a publisher might want and make them available at the click of a mouse. You won't send them all that information at once, but providing links allows them to access further information immediately.

  1. Show them that you are easy to work with by keeping records of the communications and staying organized.

  2. Be quick to respond to any communications.

  3. Do everything that you can to reduce their workload and they are going to look at you more seriously.

Know what a published author requires and be in the process of getting this ready prior to querying. For instance, you know that you will need a website, you'll need to develop a presence online, you'll need to get reviews and blurbs before the book is released. Show the publisher that you are working on those press releases, articles, images, interviews, by-lines, signatures, bios, websites, social media and social networking sites. Have that all set up and ready to go, with links to everything, ready to access with just a click of their mouse.
