Back In The Office

Back In The Office During a regular weekly Zoom meeting with a writer-friend, we were discussing the recent adventure Dave and I are on and how it affected the office, production schedule and content creation for our blogs and YouTube channel . Both Phyllis and I were sharing the feeling of just plain being overwhelmed with having so much to do and feeling so far behind.  The mind keeps cycling: "...where to start? Where to start?" Phyllis and I keep each other both comforted and motivated, simply by meeting once per week and sharing. Speaking with her about my weekly woes and joys helps settle my whirling mind a little and she's helped pull me out of the downward cycle of depression more than once. (Thanks, Phyllis!!)  The thing is that the "big picture" is loaded down with is such a large to-do list. From fencing and getting a lawn put in, to exterior painting, tons of office work, book publication schedules that were put on pause to accomodate this move.. p...

Contributing and Benefiting (Part 2)

Contributing and Benefiting Part 2 Creston is a little city in the heart of the Kootenay Region (of BC Canada) surrounded by a string of small villages, large towns, and several medium sized cities with larger amenities just under 2 hours away. This is a popular area for tourists and being in the centre of this region we get a lot of travellers going from one city to another, back and forth.  The Kootenays plays host to many popular cyclist and motorbike events, large music and literacy festivals and classic car events in the surrounding area. In fact by watching and increasing our awareness we learned that the region tends to have dozens and dozens of events happening every single week - each with its own special focus and audience. Some will be run by non-profits or on behalf of those non-profits. Some will be created in an effort to support a local school, community garden or neighborhood park. Other events will be smaller yet - such a garage sale raising funds to support a fam...

business advice

The best business advice I have shared with others is: "Don’t make anyone work for anything; provide everything they will need so that they do not have to ask for it."  As an entrepreneur you really do need to be prepared for each action you intend to take. You have to keep motivated and have a steady level of self-discipline to learn what each step requires.  Let's look at the example of taking the book you have written to the publication stage. At this point you need to learn how to query your manuscript to a publisher. You'll research information on how to find the right publisher and you'll be looking at various publication options, deciding on the ones that suit your situation best. The next thing to pursue is attaining an understanding of what publishers want from potential authors. You'll also want to understand the publishing process so that if they decide to sign that contract, you will be ready for the next steps ahead of you. Now, the best way to st...

Creative Networking

Networking plays a huge role in maintaining any business - and finding creative ways to begin or continue networking with our contacts can be a challenge. A great deal of time and effort is necessary behind the scenes before we reach out to create dialogue with a contact, and then even more time goes into building a positive relationship with them where both parties benefit. Therefore we need our networking efforts to be as effective and efficient as possible. At the same time, we should want those networking connections to continue indefinitely. So when we are approaching a new networking contact, it is important to keep in mind that our goal is to create a long-term relationship with them.  At first, several ideas will pop into our creative mind - ways we can support others, what we may be able to offer, what we are looking for from them, options we may want to consider in the future. That is great! Do those, but pace them out so that we are not doing all these things at once. Sp...

Being self employed

Amazon Author Page: https://amazon.com/author/lillianbrummet What it takes to be self-employed  Starting a self-employed, home-based business can be very stressful – there’s a lot to do and pressures are running high, while you watch the budget trickle away. Unfortunately a lot of folks rush into their dream of running a business and find out in one big awful moment that there is a lot more to it than skipping off to your dream. Initially, the goal should be getting known, building that name recognition, developing a super strong platform and getting a reputation. How one goes about this varies with the genre, personality, budget and location. Marketing plans have to evolve with changing situations and owners will find themselves experimenting with all kinds of new opportunities, testing them to see if they will work out. Business plans need to be flexible and have contingencies in place for everything from injuries and illness to death or building failures (floods, etc.). My first...
