Fewer Should's

Focusing on Fewer Should's As most of our loyal readers are aware, I have written a series of articles offering tips for getting out of a negative mindset.  I personally struggle with depression and easily slide into darkness… I work hard to reach for the light, the positive, celebrating little things and being grateful. I keep checking my speech and thought patterns, saying to myself "oops I didn't mean that, I meant..." and I consciously correct the mistake.  In communications I aim to express my appreciation for their time, concern, attention. If something stands out at that moment, I'll mention how much I liked that thing - to let them know.  I will consciously seek for positive activities, posts, events and other happenings. I try to celebrate their efforts whenever I can. When you start looking, it really is amazing how many things are happening across the globe every day that make the world a better place. Recently I found myself sliding into a negative spa...

Do The Purge

Back in August I started a series of articles about getting through darkness whether it be caused by stress, anxiety, chronic pain, illness, grief or depression.  Looking back on my life-long struggle with darkness, I could see a pattern - and by taking tiny steps toward positivity I could slowly drag myself out of the depths of the darkness and the heavy suction pull of its vacuum.  This series that I started back in August (2024) share these tiny steps that lead toward positivity. Feel free to scroll back, August - present day, to find more articles like this. Do The Purge Sharing how we feel can seem like we are imposing on others. We don't want to bring them down into the dumps with us, that is for sure. We don't want to get them worried about us, regularly expressing concern for us after we unload on them.  Sharing can be difficult simply because it is hard to put how we are feeling in word format.  One of the tricks I learned was simply purging how I felt in on...

Break The Pattern

Back in August I started a series of articles about getting through darkness whether it be caused by stress, anxiety, chronic pain, illness, grief or depression.  Looking back on my life-long struggle with darkness, I could see a pattern - by taking tiny steps toward positivity and I could slowly drag myself out of the depths of the darkness and the heavy suction pull of its vacuum.  This series that I started back in August (2024) share these tiny steps that lead toward positivity. Feel free to scroll back, August - present day, to find more articles like this. Break The Pattern Sadly when we are going through stress, anxiety, chronic pain, anger or insomnia, depression or grief... when we are going through that we tend to do so alone. We hide how we are feeling from others. We don't want to impose. We don't want to weight them down.  ...We don't want them to hold us accountable either. We fear judgement, we can't trust our bodies, and we fear estrangement. Being in da...

Cut Out The Negativity

Back in August I started a series of articles about getting through darkness whether it be caused by stress, anxiety, chronic pain, illness, grief or depression.  Looking back on my own struggle with darkness, I could see a pattern - by taking tiny steps toward positivity and I could slowly drag myself out of the depths of the darkness and the heavy suction pull of its vacuum.  Today we continue this discussion with another simple positive habit for you, along with a few examples to help you apply it to your own daily life. Cut Out The Negativity When darkness comes in to our lives it is important to cut negative things out. Especially when we are easily triggered and feel vulnerable, susceptible to negativity. We can change this simply by feeding our minds with positivity, and eradicating anything negative.  Embrace Silence  Keep the device controls handy so that you can silence ads by pressing mute and wait patiently for them to end. Better yet, use that moment to ...

Get Out Of The Rut #5

Today I'm continuing the discussion we've been having for the last couple months re: overcoming difficult stresses like moving, grief and depression.  This is the fifth installment in the Getting Out Of The Rut series.  Now that we have settled in to our home somewhat, I am able to set aside a short amount of time every morning just for myself.  Taking a cup of coffee, I take a seat on our front steps where the shade is deep due to the cascading branches above. Sipping from that cup I giggle at the girls antics (our dogs) and gaze in amusement at the chittering squirrel family rushing to and fro. The sprinkler going, of course, this early in the morning adds a certain charm to the scene.  Coffee done, I roll out the mat on the decks entry carpet and begin a series of stretches. Taking deep breaths I let go of the strain, I clean my lungs and listen to the soft peals of music. Then I start my day.  I have always found solace, comfort, a sense of solidarity when s...

Oh, The Stress Of It All

Oh, The Stress Of It All Well - we found a buyer for our home and had less than 5 weeks to both find a suitable home and move into it. Once we signed that contract it was weeks of sleepless nights, restless tummy, fretful mind, sweaty palms and frazzled hair. Was I stressed? ...You bet I was !!!  Many of you already know that I suffer from an anxiety disorder; stress affects me physically causing rashes and vomiting, and I easily fall into depression. With moving being one of the most stressful things a person can go through, I knew I would have to use more than a few tranquilizers to get through the storm to come.  By using calming, meditative music and occasionally some blues or 70's music during the day I was able to greatly reduce the stress I was feeling, and the dogs love to nap to music. To quiet the mind at night I've begun listening to short audio books via YouTube - these are especially helpful on those sleepless nights.  Long showers helped ease the physical ac...

Anxiety

Anxiety epidemic * Written by: Oliver JR Cooper: t eacher, author and consultant - O liverJRCooper.co.uk Along with depression, anxiety is one of the most common mental, as well as emotional and physical, problems in today's world. Emotional and physical was used above as both depression and anxiety is not always just a mental problem. Like depression, anxiety is often something that affects someone's whole being, not merely their mind. So if someone doesn't struggle with anxiety, there is a strong chance that they know someone who does. But even if they don't know anyone who does, there is the chance that they will have heard about people that do. Through using social media, for instance, one may have come across a number of people that have anxiety problems. Along with this, they may have heard a lot about the help that is available and what someone can do, if they do suffer from anxiety, whilst watching TV or listening to the radio. Undoubtedly, it is a lot easie...

Connecting with People

Connecting with People  * Written by: Shirley Taylor, who invites you to check out her site at: www.shirleytaylor.com I have known several leaders who believe: ' The minute I climb up the ladder, I can do things my way because people will have to listen to me' . This is so dangerous. The truth is that your ultimate success is more likely to depend on your ability to build relationships with people.  The damage that can stem from poor communication is sometimes irreversible and could have a domino effect such as a tense and negative working atmosphere. This could result in loss of trust and low morale, which can lead to good staff leaving. Poor communication can also result in confusion, leading to poor task handling and perhaps errors. When this involves clients, it could lead to lost business and damaged relationships. Communicating With Heart The one cardinal rule that I think everyone should embrace is what I call communicating with heart. So often today, office worke...
