Do The Purge

Back in August I started a series of articles about getting through darkness whether it be caused by stress, anxiety, chronic pain, illness, grief or depression.

Looking back on my life-long struggle with darkness, I could see a pattern - and by taking tiny steps toward positivity I could slowly drag myself out of the depths of the darkness and the heavy suction pull of its vacuum.

This series that I started back in August (2024) share these tiny steps that lead toward positivity. Feel free to scroll back, August - present day, to find more articles like this.

Do The Purge

Sharing how we feel can seem like we are imposing on others. We don't want to bring them down into the dumps with us, that is for sure. We don't want to get them worried about us, regularly expressing concern for us after we unload on them.

Sharing can be difficult simply because it is hard to put how we are feeling in word format.

One of the tricks I learned was simply purging how I felt in one of two ways.

Talking to the walls.
Writing it out.

Talking to yourself, praying to a higher power, talking to our ancestors... however you view it - it can be very healing. When you know you are alone, and the windows are closed, talk quietly out loud. I might start by greeting the universe & ancestors, followed by all the things I am grateful for at the moment and then I'll talk about current projects or struggles I'm facing. Just talking it out is a fantastic healing tool. Later on, I might talk with a human being, but for now just purging it out by myself without any one judging or looking at me as I search for words and come to an understanding about how I am feeling.

One of my favourite tools is writing - and as a published author - I'm sure this comes as no surprise to you. However I began this habit long before writing professionally. This is recommended in therapy and shamans used to recommend this as a healing tool as well.

What you do is set aside a good half hour or more, one a regular basis, to just express how you're feeling and what has been on your mind lately. Don't show anybody this. This isn't meant for anybody else. Here on the paper you will not be criticized, no one will try to fix you and you're not going to be judged by anybody. You can pour all the hateful awful garbage, all the negative thoughts and feelings and just puke it all out on the on these paper.

You might be surprised at how you are feeling, shocked at the raw way you expressed it and maybe a little guilty. That is normal.

Take that paper somewhere safe, where you can light it on fire and you want to watch it burn. Let yourself think: "Okay - I felt this way... I've purged it. It's gone. It's out. I'm releasing it and I can feel the empty space it left behind. I choose to fill that space with positivity."

This ancient healing tool is still used today in therapy.  It is a safe, healthy way of releasing your thoughts. Somehow, that elephant weight that sits on your chest is lessened and you get those moments of breath.

Moments of freedom from the darkness.

Therefore I'm recommending to bringing in moments of freedom from the darkness using one or both of these tools.
