Combatting Negativity

You may be wondering why we share so many Recommended Resources and eco-events on our blog. I was recently asked this very question by a member of the media... and there are several reasons.

Firstly, it offers similar organizations to become aware of one another and with the contact information they are able to network, learn from one another and collaborate on projects.

Secondly, it allows volunteers access to new opportunities, new experiences.

It also gives those who are involved in fundraising events (or have the ability to donate funds) a chance to make a difference in a variety of ways.

And finally, I believe that we can combat much of the negativity in the world by celebrating all the positive, amazing, wonderful changes that are going on every day.

For instance, just one organization – Center for Food Safety - centerforfoodsafety.org – has been able to help get “12 bee-killing pesticides taken off the market, challenge new GMO crops and pesticides in court, close down unethical factory farms, and protect federal waters from the toxic chemicals used by huge aquaculture facilities” among 17 successful projects they’ve participated in this last year.

Or take for example - Columbia Land Trust -  ColumbiaLandTrust.org who arranges lectures and events such as the bald eagle tour, produces guides for bird-watching hotspots, and helps to protect natural lands and all their inhabitants.

Or Seeds of Diversity  (Seeds.ca) who maintains a collection of over 2900 regionally-adapted and rare varieties of plants, backing them up via seed vaults, networking with other seed saving organizations, heritage farmers and international government seed libraries. They also help gardeners learn about soil health, pollinators, producing food and farm support programs as well.

I feel that if more of us realized actions like this are happening in billions of directions, by millions and millions of non-profit organizations around the planet - we begin to view life differently, we see the future as full of possibilities and we gain incentive to join in and help make a difference because we feel not only inspired but also empowered by the knowledge we are not alone.
