Not only can we grow food that is harvested at it's peak nutritional level, with amazing flavour, and... for free - but we also reduce the environmental impact of our menu plan.
Add some flowering annuals, trees, shrubs and a wildflower or two - This will attract more pollinators who will ensure that you get a great harvest.
These plants provide food, shelter and habitat for a number of very important and beautiful creatures.
As you expand the plantings and potted plants a great number of bees of all shapes and sizes will start appearing.
What was that that just fluttered by? O how beautiful!
Witness the butterflies, sphynx moths, evening moths and tiny birds that are now dropping into your yard for a welcome respite.
Sound like an amazing experience? Well it is... and we have done it here on our property.
Visitors too became intrigued by the many colours and sizes and shapes of these wonderfully dancing creatures that brighten the day... who remind us to pause in a moment of appreciation.
That's when I started looking into identification resources once more. There are many and some are for specific regions...
For instance this butterfly and moth identification resource (below) was made for Merritt, BC (Canada)... quite a drive from here, but the butterflies don't know that.
* Even if the resource is not exactly from your backyard it can still prove useful.
It is interesting to discover the surprising number of wildlife and nature organizations, groups and publications that one stumbles upon during this kind of research.
