Pollinator Week Canada 2024 June 17 - 23 Pollinator Week is a project that was started  by Pollinator Partnerships Canada in 2007 and soon grew to become an international event with National Pollinator Week events happening across the planet.  Learn about pollinators, citizen science and back yard or school projects... promote pollinator health by spreading the word and planting gardens.  Scan for online webinars, in person gatherings, garden tours and farm tours... there is a lot going on! Planting for positive change is a real passion of ours.  Not only can we grow food that is harvested at it's peak nutritional level, with amazing flavour, and... for free - but we also reduce the environmental impact of our menu plan.  Add some flowering annuals, trees, shrubs and a wildflower or two - This will attract more pollinators who will ensure that you get a great harvest.  These plants provide food, shelter and habitat for a number of very important and beautiful creatures.  As you expand the plantings and potted plants a great number of bees of all shapes and sizes will start appearing.  What was that that just fluttered by? The Gardeners' Contribution For those of you who are our regular readers - you are already fully aware of our passion for greening the world through small community gardening plots,  shade producing plantings near buildings and green roofs. One can even grow vines that will flower, produce food and shade sun-drenched zones like large windows, decks and patios, walkways and entrances. And let's not to forget to mention the water gardens, vegetable gardens and green roofs as well.  Some of you may recount the story of our last property where we turned an abused rental to a little green cottage oasis filled with trees, shrubs, flowers and food-producing gardens. It was featured in a small local magazine and also the local paper at the time. That was 11 years ago. Seedy Saturdays ... have you ever been to a seed exchange? It can be an experience to remember. As you stroll down the booths, you'll hear interesting conversations with knowledgeable gardeners, farmers who have deep roots in the area -  possibly for generations. Depending on the size of the event, you'll see a huge array of varieties, most of which you've probably never heard of and be introduced to all shapes, sizes and colours of pretty much anything you can think of.  Attending events like these also introduces local food and beverage producers who are offering snacks and refreshments. You'll learn of groups and organizations (both big and small, unofficial ones) that may peak your interest. Often, non-profits will display information packages where you might learn about citizen science projects in your area, things your kids can get involved in, learn how seniors are helping the non-profits, and much more.  *if you would like your event listed here - just reac...
