Happy World Reptile Day!!!!
Set aside by those most concerned about wildlife habitat preservation and species extinction, this day raises awareness of new scientific information about all reptiles, scientists gather to share information, the Internet is a-buzz with online events, lectures, etc. ...and communities across the planet are hosting a variety of fun filled, informative, inspiring things to do.
More likely than not, your community too has something going on for water health and shore line clean up projects, lizards, turtles, snakes, gecko, alligator and many other organizations. You might find information booths, artists selling wares along the theme, fundraisers for local organizations and more.
Did you know that amphibians like frogs are not going to be included in this special day... because they are not reptiles.
Did you also know...
- That reptiles don't have sweat glands?
- That there are 4 "classes" of reptiles: Sphenodontia (native to New Zealand), squamata (lizards, snakes, worm-lizards), Testudines (turtles, tortoise and terrapins) and also the famous Crocodilia (alligators, caimans, crocodiles).
- That some, like lizards and snakes, use their tongue to collect particulate matter from the air tasting it and this gives them the ability to "smell" their environment?
- That turtles have existed for about 200 million years and they haven't changed much in appearance.
- That some have incredibly long lives? - Tortoises have been known to live more than 150 years, and tuataras live to around 100 years of age.
If you are able to, and inspired to do so, now is the perfect time to choose a water related, bird, frog or reptile related organization to volunteer, visit, become a member or donate to. It is even easier to share their information on your social media to help spread the word about the work they are doing. Get out for a little fresh air and visit a shoreline (or trail near by) of a river, creek, lake or pond and clean up any litter you find. Any effort on your part is appreciated by all of us!
