Poverty

Did you know that today is a very special day... It is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty... 30th anniversary, in fact. For 30 years this special day was set aside to raise awareness for everything from human rights, child development, lower income, health, discriminations, housing, job creation and education to food sharing.

Take a look around your local surroundings and you'll likely discover thrift shops you can donate your excess to. Those shops in the basement of a church, or a small corner shop in town often help support health services and fight poverty right in your community. Most of us can start opening cupboards and drawers, go into storage areas, bookshelves and magazine racks, look in the dark recesses of our closets and find things we haven't used in a couple years and aren't likely to use in the near future. Cleaning, repairing if necessary, and donating to these organizations is a fantastic way to get involved.

You might find that you have a few dollars to spare that you can donate to the local food bank. Perhaps you can plan to grow and extra row in your garden to donate to the church fundraising events, "soup" kitchens, charitable dinner events, food-share programs, or the food bank.

Don't forget the pets... people in poverty love and cherish their pets and will often forgo their own needs to ensure their pets are fed.   A little help at the donation box at the vet office, donating returnable bottle/cans to the fundraiser at the depot for the local animal shelters, donating pet food and supplies to the food bank or animal shelters... all of these actions have a profound effect on the issues poverty brings up in the community.
