Why You Need A Media Page

The one tool that authors and most other entrepreneurs tend to skip is creating a Media Page on their blog or website. I'm not speaking here about a media kit... Media kits, Press kits, One-sheets are single page information sheets. These are often hidden, unpublished pages created only for members of the media to use - no one else wants to see it. In this situation the link would be sent directly to the individual and is often included in your query letter. These days, members of the media tend to prefer a Bio-link Landing Page.

The Media Page will contain a list of links to online appearances with the most recent ones at the top. This includes:

Podcast interviews

Published articles that you have written

Published press releases

Published book excerpts

Blog interviews

Maintain the length of your list by deciding on the number of links that suit that page the best. Our media page lists 70-100 online media appearances... and that means we maintain it occasionally, taking out the older ones so that the list does not get too long.

So how, exactly, does taking the time to build a media page benefit you?

Interested people, including readers, can browse this page at their leisure, learning more about your work. Members of the media tend to do research on the people they are about to work with; a media page will allow them to hear how you speak, see how you appear in the media, topics that you have covered and how you might fit in with their program. It gives them a better idea as to what they can expect from you. It gives them more confidence in you when they see the long list of media appearances. On top of all of this they will see that you are working hard to promote your media events.

We use our Media Page as a networking tool too, allowing us to connect with others in similar genres from publishers to publicity agents, bloggers to coaches, authors to musicians, or gardeners to green-living enthusiasts. Each of these contacts is encouraged to visit the page where they can have access to potentially helpful resources. They get to know us better, and gain confidence in maintaining and nurturing a networking relationship. They also gain access to potential promotional opportunities because those media outlets may be interested in having them as a guest as well. Simply stating "I saw your interview with Lillian Brummet" in the query letter will open the door for them, and their query letter will receive more attention.

Having a media page:

Improves confidence level with cold contacts

Nurtures networking relationships

Creates new opportunities

Solidifies name recognition

Boosts market authority

As you can see, there are many reasons to have a media page.
