Easy Green Living Tips
The best thing to do is once ever couple of months assign a project to a staff member, or a grandchild when they are visiting - to double check and see what has changed in regards to the recycling and take-back programs in our region, because it is changing and improving all the time.
The city will have a website where you can find current programs listed. However, you'll need to dig a little deeper too.
There could be companies that have take-back programs that are not necessarily a part of the city's waste management programs.
Become familiar with your suppliers, retailers that you shop at regularly and learn what they are doing to be more sustainable.
Take the time to get to know your mechanic, friends with workshops, programs happening in the community to find out what they might need.
- One place may need small, clean yogurt and pudding cups
- another may need rags of a particular size
- the animal shelter and wildlife rescue might have use for torn towels, old duvets and stained blankets.
Investigate the websites or FB pages for local second-hand and thrift stores to see what they accept.
Have you considered dismantling things before tossing away?
Maybe it is worth taking apart that broken thing and saving the screws, brackets, wheels and other parts for their workshop supply section. Maybe you can remove the buttons and zippers from tattered clothing and store in clear plastic peanut butter jars until it is full - then give/donate them as sewing and craft supplies.
Don't forget to check out the local landfill!
Most landfill sites have a reuse site where you can find perfectly usable doors, boards, chairs, paint and all kinds of things that still have life in them. There are all kinds of ways to reduce our waste stream before it heads to the landfill.
