Waste Reduction

-- Quote of the Day --

"Charisma is not so much getting people to like you as getting people to like themselves when you're around."

Kudos to Sweden who has surpassed all other nations in reaching zero waste – in fact they have a 99% recovery rate. The country has such an efficient system in place that they are able to import waste from the UK, Italy, Norway and Ireland!

About 50% of the waste is sorted taking out anything that can be reused and recycled i.e. electronics, glass, food, returnable beverage containers (about 1.5 billion bottles and cans) and paper. Since 3 tons of waste provides as much energy as one ton of fuel, the country is able to produce approximately 950,000 homes with heating and 260,000 homes with electricity through incineration, an industry with a dark past but an exciting future where new technology has made it safer, more efficient and cleaner.

It is a temporary solution to the world’s waste production however it is a good one and one that is able to create jobs, stimulate the economy, reduce dependence on oil and prevents toxic gasses and leachates via landfill sites or open burning. They’ve laws in place that puts the responsibility for waste and recycling costs back on the producers and incentives are in place helping companies have a more positive impact.
