National Recycling Week

National Recycling Week is coming up tomorrow, November 11th - this day was set aside in Australia to help promote curb-side, industrial and community recycling initiatives and to provide individuals with the tools to minimize waste. Throughout the week Australians can find farm and eco-tours, waste management facility tours, recycling information pop-up stands and reuse of items formally destined for the waste bin. Also watch for sustainability related lectures, treasure hunts, lectures and classes involving "up-cycling" or "re-purpose"- using material from "trash" items to create something new.  http://brummetmedia.ca/store.html There are far too many events in Australia to list on my blog but you can find a list of some of them here: https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/events/ This is a good time for all of us outside of Australia to consider our lifestyle habits. - Donating to, and shopping at, charity-driven thrift and gift shops is a won...

Fun crafts for families

BrummetMedia.ca 5 Fun Eco-crafts The joy of the holidays makes its way into our homes and offices several times a year. From birthdays and anniversaries to Halloween we all want to make the most of them, but there are a lot of people out there on constrained budgets. Families are aching to spend time together, but sometimes, they just don't know what to do that would be fun for everyone.  Here are some tips that could help you accomplish all of these things: Save birthday and holiday cards - consider all the cards you've received or those that you've made wrong entries in and don't want to send it out looking used like that ... they are all useful. Start by sorting the cards into themes and then sort them from large to small in size. Those little bits of ribbons that you've been saving will come in handy now too. If you don't have any, visit your local wedding and flower shops to see if they have any bits and ends for your projects. Thrift stores will...

Organization & Downsizing Tips

Organization & Downsizing Tips Organization and downsizing shows are very popular and as we look on with envy at their well managed belongings… Screws, bolts, picture hooks, plant hangers, curtain hooks, nails, small parts and hardware can quickly become a huge mess if they are not organized. Have you ever tried to find anything in that “junk drawer” or the bottom of the toolbox, where these items are typically thrown? Then in frustration, we take the extra time to head down to the hardware store to buy something we already had. The best way to store these items is in clear plastic, screw top containers – found for free simply by washing out those empty peanut butter or mayonnaise containers. We prefer the extra large containers with the wide lid, but smaller ones come in quite handy too. Because they are clear, we can see at a glance what they contain. Being plastic, they will not break or crack like glass would, and their contents do not make as much noise when the container...

Making More out of Lazy Leisure Days

Making More out of Lazy Leisure Days When the sun is out the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time cooking a meal and when vacationing, the lure to purchase instant and snack foods is strong. Unfortunately, these convenience foods come with excess packaging. As we can see when we come across trash in the wilderness, snack wrappers and beverage containers are the most common litter we find. It is quite interesting that numerous studies prove tourists return to an area primarily for its cleanliness and greenery. In this era where the economy has come to rely more on tourism, cleaning up is truly a benefit for any community. When leisurely paddling the canoe and watching the water, one can often see the muddy bottom, where it is easy to spot larger debris. Put on a mask and snorkel to discover some amazing finds. One of the first times we did this, we found an expensive diving mask in about 30 feet of water - enough incentive to continue this practice! We have also found ant...

Limitless Reuse

Limitless Reuse The concept of reusing is as limitless as your imagination… When some item around the home falls apart, is not worth repairing and is destined for the landfill… take a quick moment to look it over first. You might find the doors of a cabinet have decent hinges, handles, magnets that can be removed with a screwdriver. Even legs and wheels from furniture can be removed and reused. Screws, bolts and washers… these are all worth saving too. Handles from pots and pans can come in handy for fashioning custom tools, or they can be used to make a storage box easy to carry; attached to the back of a cupboard they become something handy to drape your rubber gloves on.  These various parts can easily be organized and stored in clear plastic containers of various appropriate sizes (wash and reuse containers from the kitchen, i.e. peanut butter, mayonnaise, etc.). Over the years you may find that the button jar has gotten full, or you can’t fit another hinge in th...
