Local Food Movement
“Launching this BC Centre for Agritech Innovation will improve productivity here in B.C., meaning more food will be grown closer to home, leading to lower costs associated with transporting food. Simply put, this centre makes us a global front-runner in agritech.”
The quote above is taken from this really interesting article about the growing trend, and the need, of purchasing food from local producers or suppliers that stock locally grown produced goods. Our menu plan has a huge ecological impact, it can be a positive impact - however - if we choose to shop locally.
Imagine an item grown from far away has to get loaded on a truck and taken to storage, then loaded on a truck and driven 300 miles (or whatever the distance is) to another storage unit where it is repackaged and distributed to the various stores. Much of that fossil fuel cost is reduced simply by purchasing from locally produced goods.
The other aspect of this shopping habit is that you are more likely supporting smaller farms and small businesses, inspired entrepreneurs and artists when you shop locally - and this creates a sustainable, rich community and a healthier environment.
There is the nutritional aspect to consider as well. When food items are harvested, they begin to lose nutrients... slowly, slowly.... and this means the longer they are stored they will contain less nutrient value.
The packaging and repackaging of the food items as they travel from one warehouse to another has a huge impact, too, for a sustainable world. So there are a lot of things to consider when we are planning our menu.
We've seen, occasionally, rough seasons where a highway was cut off because of a landslide, or some other interruption in the supply chain - and this gives more reason to supporting a local food movement.
