celebrating: International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day was established by the UN in an effort to help manage fragile mountain ecosystems back in 2003.  Most of us are aware that mountains provide the vast amount of fresh water, energy and food, but they are also threatened by encroachment, forest and soil degradation. This day was set aside to that scientists and government officials can discover the global challenges and find sustainable answers.  Biodiversity, eco-tourism, land remediation, planting projects and litter-clean-up projects can provide some of these solutions.  This is a great time to consider the role you might play in this... perhaps you can support a tree planting organization, join in an invasive plant management group, gather the family to clean up a trashy spot, join in local environmental groups and trail management groups, and help increase awareness... I'd love to hear what you might suggest too... so be sure to comment and leave some suggestions for people to cons...

recommended resources

-- Recommended Resources --  Let's start today with a link to a large public-interest non-profit organization that focuses on health, justice and sustainability in agriculture. You'll find plenty of campaigns you can join, projects you can support, networking, community events and volunteer/ gardening connections. http://www.organicconsumers.org/ Next: Here is a humorous and informative discussion by Michael Pollan – about how plants manipulate their environment to their benefit, and looking at the plant’s point of view when it comes to agriculture. In this talk he gives the example of Joel Salatin’s Polyface Farm ( www.PolyFaceFarms.com ) where on just 100 acres he is able to produce 40000 lbs of beef, 000 lbs of rabbit, 30000 lbs of pork, 25,0000 eggs and hay, with an additional 450 acres of sustainably managed forest. This talk touches on all the terms we hear about in the industry – biodynamic, biodiversity, sustainable,...

Green Business

-- Quote of the Day --   "Waste not the smallest thing created, for grains of sand make mountains, and atomies infinity. Waste not the smallest time in imbecile infirmity, for well thou knowest that seconds form eternity." ~ E. Knight -- Green Business -- A new project is now being implemented by several Japanese family restaurants that helps conserve biodiversity in rice patties and then serving that rice to patrons of the restaurants.  The Living Things Friendly Rice Paddies project also offers hands-on experience, demonstrations for enhancing biodiversity and both the sharing and creation of techniques for sustainable farming (that also offers profit) and increased biodiversity. Creating Positive Change

-- Quote of the Day --    “If people don’t do well with people because of their background, they might have to go back to animals… They are introducing, for instance, animals to prisons where people who couldn’t love were able to love and care for a kitten or a horse. But if you can’t do animals, do plants – if people learn to care for plants, to love and nurture a plant – this is a place where tremendous healing can take place. …It is always there: the power of reconnecting with the earth, allowing the earth to be the healing power that it is.”     ~ Kathryn Hall Today’s quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio episode that aired back on May 5 … titled: SundayGardening   (*Click on the title to access the full discussion) -- Referral Corner -- I periodically offer recommended resources here for our readers to check out - I focus this section on businesses,...

International day of Biodiversity

-- Quote of the Day -- "Accountability breeds response-ability."  - Stephen R Covey -- International Day of Biodiversity -- Today is International Day of Biodiversity. According to the Convention on Biological Diversity ( www.cbd.int ) " The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity  to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. " Last year's theme focused on invasive species - this year's theme focuses on green space development and poverty alleviation. So many plants and animals are threatened by human activities - that we have lost about 30% of the animal diversity in the last 50 years. Did you know that there is an unprecedented decline in the number of species happening right now, every single day? During the last century as much as 75% of our food biodiversity has died out and only 10% remains!! Every single one of us has played a role in this vast destruction - and yet, because this ...
