Conscious Consumerism  Conscious consumerism alone has a major impact on the local economy, your personal health, budget constraints and the environment. It involves looking at the power of each dollar spent and evaluating how it can make a difference while benefiting your family. Sign into your favorite social networking sites and join local buy and sell, advertise, entrepreneur and local event groups. Doing so will expose you to small and home-based entrepreneurs producing wonderful products at great prices. You may find artists who carve beautiful house address signs out of scraps they obtained from a woodwork shop operating just a few blocks from you, who purchased their materials from a local mill. Each of these small businesses hires local people and buys coffee for their staff room and gas from local stations. Recycling November 15th is officially America Recycles Day - set aside by the US Environmental Protection Agency who recognized the importance of recycling to the economy and to the environment in 2018 via this special day. In the beginning of the US recycling/returnable programs in the early 60's they achieved only 7% return rate... but today as of this year they have seen an increase to 35%. Now while the growth rate is something to celebrate, 35% leaves a long way to go if we want to create a sustainable world. Did you know it is National Ozone Day tomorrow Sept 16?  Apparently, tomorrow - September 16th - was set aside by request of the United Nations as an annual day to celebrate steps that have been taken to preserve and repair the atmosphere, from air quality to the ozone layer.  It is a good time to reflect about our own behaviours, actions, day-to-day choices and purchases. Did you know that I once wrote a column on this topic back in 2000-2007 that was published in several countries around the world? Some publications would use it as a monthly column, others bi-weekly, and it reached all around the world and won several awards. around 2007 I decided to compile all the articles and create a database in book format for people interested in saving money while having a positive impact on the environment.
