International Compost Awareness Week

Eco-Event International Compost Awareness Week May 3 - 9 2020 Theme : For the Love of the Earth; soil loves compost This is the largest and most intensive education initiative of the compost industry - it began in Canada in 1995 but now reaches around the planet, raising awareness about the benefits of all types of composting. Compost improves the nutrients available in soil, increases loam which is responsible for retaining moisture and reducing watering needs. Composting is a good tool for carbon sequestering and reduces the amount of organics filling up the landfills. When organics head to the landfill, they mix with all kinds of other materials and become dangerous because the liquids released (leachates) cause all kinds of water and land pollution issues. The gases released can explode and often result in landfill fires, endangering workers. With up to 30-60% organic material in the landfill, we could make that landfill last a lot longer by diverting that organ...

The impact of your menu plan

The impact of the Menu Plan *Some  of the following  stats were derived from CenterForFoodSafety.org: Food makes up 21 % of waste in the landfills where it combines with all the other waste and produces toxic gases, leachates, fires and explosions that endanger the planet and the landfill workers. Composting is one of the most proactive things we can do for the planet - there are electric units available for condo/apartment dwellers that will dry and grind organics into a powder. There are larger bio-machines for restaurants, other machines will actually generate energy from the organics before they break down into soil. Or go for the backyard version that can easily manage organic waste.  http://brummetmedia.ca/store.html Did you know that it only takes a tiny amount of fossil-fuel energy to produce local fresh foods – as opposed to those that often travel 300 miles or more to get to your table?  Switching to fresh foods an...

Celebrating : World Soil Day

World Soil Day  I can just hear the eyeballs rolling of our regular readers... "Here she goes" they must be thinking... because I have a huge passion for building healthy soil through composting organic matter. World Soil Day was set aside to help us raise awareness about soil pollution, remediation and composting of organics. Setting up a home-based and office-based compost system is fairly easy now-a-days. There are even condo and apartment units that plug in and dehydrate the organic matter into a dry powder that you can then spread on a lawn, around a tree, place in the plant pots on your deck, or give to a gardener. Buy Now Organics in the landfill are responsible for more toxic leachate, more air pollution than vehicles. They are also responsible for up to 60% of the content in a landfill, filling up these limited waste management sites far too quickly.  Use the small  "search"  box on the side bar of this blog and type in compost or soil to ...

Food Waste

-- Thoughts On Food Waste --  Have you ever sat in a restaurant and wondered if your table sent so much un-eaten food back for disposal, just how much is being wasted at every table, every night? The answer – a lot. There’s a lot at the back where all the food processing is done as well. Bins of the stuff is being created every day at the back of every café, grocery store, deli, coffee shop, and restaurant (to name a few). If your area is rich in agriculture, you likely have some kind of processing or manufacturing or brewing companies in town. They too, create bins of the stuff. So what to do about all this waste? Well, you do know I’m a huge proponent of composting – and a lot of companies have created programs to compost their waste, or utilized existing ones in their communities. So that is starting to take root as part of our culture. Individuals too are taking up composting much more readily, and so they can take advantage of this (or commu...
