The weight of grief

-- Pet Grief Poem -- Today I'd like to share with you a poem that Dave's dad Frank Nick Brummet wrote when we were grieving our first dog Skylo. Yesterday's post shared the journey we underwent with our grandma dog Skyla. Yes the names are similar. After Skylo passed on nearly 13 years ago, we found Skyla in the paper a few months later - listed as available through the local SPCA. It felt like a sign - the similarity in names... and so she joined our home 12 years ago. This poem, however, is about the previous dog. Weirdly, since poetry has always been my emotional outlet,  I've never been able to write one about the heavy grief from pet loss as it hits me far to deeply. I can tell you it sits on your chest like an elephant's foot, each breath burns deep in the chest and the world becomes fuzzy and grey while your focus is on grief. It fades somewhat with time, but the pain resurfaces at the most unexpected times. Skylo's passing was shocking - as he darted aft...

to change and grow...

-- Quote of the Day --  "Sometimes in tragedy we find our life's purpose ; the eye sheds a tear to find its focus."  ~Robert Brault  Today's quote sends me to gratitude... I'm grateful for the tragedy, the grief, the hardships I've encountered so far in my 44 years on this earth in this life. Without them I wouldn't be where I am, with the people I love or the location that feeds my soul each day. I wouldn't have the skills I do, the passion I have to make a difference and live consciously with every moment I am given. I know what poverty is and how to deal with it without going crazy. When things go horribly wrong, when we loose someone, when life takes a bad turn we often realize just how resourceful we are, that we are stronger than we realized.  Each challenge is an opportunity - so when something pops up that you have to face, try changing your perception of it to being a chance to learn, to grow, to change. ...

-- Quote of the Day -- “Leah’s family come from a very small town and they are very private people, and I talked to some of them and they love the book and they love the pictures but some of them said ‘listen we are a little uncomfortable that you decided to disclose so much about your lives’… but Leah wanted to do this – and we thought the only way that this would work is to be totally open, and that can be a little uncomfortable for some people.  What I have done is I have sent them some of the responses I have received on how this book is helping people and I think they can then appreciate it even though some of it is a little difficult to read.” ~ Nick Trujillo Today’s quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio episode that aired back on Feb. 26, 2013… titled: Leaving a Legacy & Healing Grief Through Writing  (*Click on the title to access the full discussion) -- Brummet's I...

Thank you all for the incredible out-pouring of condolences and well-wishes during this time of family tragedy. We have been so moved by your kind and thoughtful letters, emails and messages. The family is doing better, handling this difficult issue very well despite the raw emotions - and we, Dave and I, hope to be back in the office for you all by Jan 11th. In the meantime I'm trying to keep up with the emails as I have time, please allow me time to get to your messages while I play catch-up in the office thru to the middle of January. Well, I'm 40 now... the big FOUR-O - which has me feeling a little differently, that is for sure. all the birthdays ending in O tend to have a big impact on me... the others not so much. :) Well, I've got to rush off again - appointments and duties call - I will, however, be back in the office almost daily now and will be back to normal by Jan 15th. In sincere appreciation, Lillian Find Dave & Lillian Brummet, excerpts from their book...
