National Recycling Week

National Recycling Week is coming up tomorrow, November 11th - this day was set aside in Australia to help promote curb-side, industrial and community recycling initiatives and to provide individuals with the tools to minimize waste.

Throughout the week Australians can find farm and eco-tours, waste management facility tours, recycling information pop-up stands and reuse of items formally destined for the waste bin. Also watch for sustainability related lectures, treasure hunts, lectures and classes involving "up-cycling" or "re-purpose"- using material from "trash" items to create something new.

There are far too many events in Australia to list on my blog but you can find a list of some of them here:

This is a good time for all of us outside of Australia to consider our lifestyle habits.

- Donating to, and shopping at, charity-driven thrift and gift shops is a wonderful place to start on this journey.

- Attending and supporting local craft shows, markets and trade shows is another way to help out.

- Buying locally produced products and services reduces waste and the fossil fuel cost involved in shipping, warehousing before you receive the item.

- Purchasing paper gift certificates (instead of plastic gift cards) from local services like music or dance lessons and car services reduces a huge amount of waste while supporting local businesses.

- Make it a focus every gift-giving season, holiday or birthday/anniversary, etc. to wrap gifts in reusable items (towel, scarf), reusable bags or boxes.
