human & animal rights

-- Conscious Living Events -- Today is the annual celebration of the International Day for Tolerance , which began back in 1995, sparked by the creation of the United Nation's Year for Tolerance , and celebrations officially began in 1996. This day was set aside to promote awareness of the dangers of intolerance. The importance of this awareness day is explained by the following excerpt from the UN's Declaration of Principles on Tolerance :  " Resolving to take all positive measures necessary to promote tolerance in our societies, because tolerance is not only a cherished principle, but also a necessity for peace and for the economic and social advancement of all peoples ."  Education seems to be the key to peaceful living and includes understanding our rights, developing empathy for others, and countering hateful information that influences fear, judgment or violent behavior. Time will pass anyway :)

-- Quote of the Day -- " Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something Stand in the way of your doing it;  The time will pass anyway ." ~ Earl Nightingale -- Conscious Living Event -- A friend of ours, Deb Lee, sent a notice about an event they are participating in for the Bicycles for Humanity Organization on Nov 13 – she invites our readers to “ Join us for a night of fabulous food, fun and some drumming along with special guest speakers. ...Help us get these bikes where they need to go! There are also some great items being offered at the silent auction ." From what I understand Hal Puder of TTM Events and The Tickle Trunk along with family, friends and some business associates – are once again involved with helping in a worth-while cause for Africa. Inspired by Bicycles For Humanity , they now have 400 bikes and need to pay for the container to get them to the people who need them.  www.bicyclesforhumanity.com   Bicycles f...

alternative gifts

-- Quote of the Day -- " In essence, if we want to direct our lives,  we must take control of our consistent actions.  It's not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives,  but what we do consistently ."    ~ Tony Robbins Looking for Alternative Eco-gifts? As promised over the next month we'll be sharing some alternative holiday options to consider... Looking for alternative ecologically friendly gifts this year? Consider purchasing a set of large, sturdy square bottomed reusable bags. There are a lot of varieties to choose from, but may I suggest those that are created from recycled plastic bottles – these are fantastic, very strong and a great way to support the waste-to-resource system that feeds a sustainable planet. Plastic litter is a huge concern. Consider this stat quoted from an article by the San Diego region’s Marine Debris Campaign Manager, Danielle Miller: “In 2007, 9,316 plastic bags …were removed, (however) countle...

Writing and Youth

-- Quote of the Day -- “Therefore we give voice to [young] people who, for the most part have never been listened to… In fact we are all just like the other and if not for some quirks in our DNA or our history we would be the ones behind bars, we would be the substance abusers, the ones abused. This has been the pinnacle of my career and I was fortunate to be apart of this – it is hard to describe how fortunate I was. …So we stress …that we are listening to them as if their voices matter – because they do.  …We want to hear how you ended up there and how we can make the world a better place. …It is their world; we have an obligation to leave it a better shape than we found it so that they have a chance.”  ~ Guy McPherson, Sept 12   Today's quote came from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio interview titled: Sustainable Living & Volunteering with Youth – which aired back on Sept 12th, 2010.  Click on the hyper-linked show title to access this interview...
