Environment - resources & discussion

-- Quote of the Day -- “… There are ions in nature, negative ions are actually the good ones. You know when you go outside after a rain and there is this feeling in the air – that is the negative ions. …And you know when you walk across the carpet and you get a shock? Well, that is positive ions. When you walk on a carpet of natural materials, you won’t get that effect. …What else brings negative ions? - Water features and plants. …Sweet Briar Nature Center developed the butterfly house to educate people about the destruction of the rain forest and our natural habitat. …What few people realize is that butterflies will need certain plants to feed from… and certain plants for laying their eggs on. They are very specific as to the species… so if the habitat is severely decreased, that butterfly will not survive .” ~ Maureen Calamia  Today's quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio show episode that aired back on – March 13 - titled: Sweetbriar Nature Cente...

Nature & Energy

-- Quote of the Day -- " The old Lakota was wise. He knew that man's heart away from nature becomes hard, he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans, too ." Luther Bear -- Conscious Living Event -- May 5-6  Solar Ontario Conference and Trade Show Location : Windsor, Ontario – Canada Info : www.cansia.ca  -- Positive Eco-News -- In keeping with the topic of alternative energy today, I'd like to offer some exciting news about wind energy.   Wind turbines generating power of up to 20 megawatts are now 'realistic', according to a report, released at the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) 2011 conference in Brussels. According to the Up Wind Project , the technology is improving so much that they can now get wind turbines to 20 megawatt (most produce 5). Using rotor diameters of around 200 meters on today's standard five-megawatt turbines would also allow huge increases in pow...

World of Writing & Conscious Dating

-- Quote of the Day -- “… When we are totally out of ego (in dating) and are being totally realistic – and this might mean examining our expectations and programming. Then we can focus on energy and chemistry – How do we feel when we are with that person? …If we wear body-shaping clothing, poof up the hair, wear more makeup… we are not being ourselves – and makeup isn’t always good for the environment. …Today, a more natural look is sexy; being more comfortable with ourselves, just as we are. ” ~ Jill Crosby  Today's quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio show episode that aired back on March 10th titled: Green and Conscious Dating Tips * Click on the hyper-linked title to access the full discussion. -- World of Writing Interview -- Nora B.  -- Chatter -- In keeping with our topic today: Youth - I wanted to share with you a poem (in lieu of the Quote of the Day) excerpted from my book Towards Understanding . This particular piece was written during a momentary depression over ethics in society - how we are taught not to be all these "good" things and that life will be rosey, but we are not taught that most adults are not able to live up to this ideal, and the world is a lot harsher than idealistic childhood views can be. We often think, as children, that when we grow up things will be brighter, better... but it isn't always so - at least not without a great deal of time and effort... and sometimes, losing connections with false friendships along the way. So this is the emotion that this poem is trying to express. Beguiling Youth *excerpted from page 135 of Towards Understanding Self-criticism denies me experiences while shame holds me in my past. Doubt in social circles leads me to my own grounds wh...

Eco-Cleaning Tips

-- Positive Eco-News -- I was re-reading a selection from the book titled: Diet for a Poisoned Planet and found that furniture polish, which has all kinds of undesirable stuff in it that can be absorbed through the skin and lungs (for the pressure-spray varieties).  One way to reduce the exposure is by spraying a semi-moist rag first – rather than aiming at the furniture and spraying a big fog of stuff out. So take a rag, let a few drops of water fall in the center of it wring it tightly to spread the water around… then spray the rag, holding the rag sort of cupped and out just far enough from the spritzer to get the optimum amount on it. This reduces a lot of the waste involved here and will make the can last longer – reducing your costs. But also, because it isn’t being sprayed into the air and on a hard surface, the spray is less likely to get in your lungs. Spraying the rag, also reduces direct skin contact during the application process. Buff your furniture with the ra...
