Product Review

-- Wall Decal Product Review --  Chris Ferguson of Splash Wall Art invited us to take on a review project of their vinyl decal designs around the end of October, and when I visited their site ( http://SplashWallArt.com ) I was really impressed with the designs they had listed there. The company has been specializing in wall decal since early 2009, and is based in Oshawa, Ontario (Canada). I was particularly interested in the Winter Tree, Bamboo, Japanese Crane, Marsh Cattails and Music Notes designs, but had a hard time choosing those from the many designs available – especially from the nature categories. Once you’ve chosen a design, you can also choose from available colors and even the direction of the design, depending on the options available.  The decals arrived on Nov 18, about 8 days after ordering, in a recyclable elongated cardboard box. The decal was rolled up in a scroll with instructions tucked inside. Reusable...

Green Roofs

-- Quote of the Day --  “The creative individual has the capacity to free himself from the web of social pressures in which the rest of us are caught. He is capable of questioning the assumptions that the rest of us accept.”  ~ John Gardner -- Green Roof --  Have you heard of green roof systems yet? We’ve written about and spoken on the topic many times over the years and have found there are some amazing projects going on in the world to create healthier buildings and communities.  You see, having a “green” building means that plants are grown on the flat surfaces on the building surface (which can really include balconies as well as walls) and also in the areas surrounding the exterior of the building, and sometimes indoor gardens as well.  Having a garden on the roof for instance might make for a healthy walking area for employees on breaks where they can socialize and get fresh air. I...

How we upgraded our home. (Part 1)

In response to a lot of questions we've received, I thought I would write a series of articles (3) to answer your interest in how to go about greening a home and yard. We have been on this property for 3 years as of Oct 15, 2013. So I thought the best way to go about sharing what we did was to describe the order we did things in, one year at a time.   *Part 2 of this article will be published on January 7th How we went about the changes and upgrades to our home.  (Part 1) Based on previous properties that we had upgraded over the years we had a good idea how and where to begin with the 1978 home we purchased on October 15, 2010. While this was a well built home, structurally sound, very few upgrades had been done and it was a rental for a while as well. So it definitely needed work. The first thing we did when preparing for the move was to look for boxes from local businesses that we could reuse. While we do keep a lot of packaging materials...

Green Amusement Parks

Happy New Year To All Our Readers!  -- Quote of the Day --  “You deserve to have a peaceful nights sleep and if you are making choices that don’t set you up for success with that – I would be curious about why am I treating myself that way. …we have a right to live happy and healthy lives and it is our job that resonate with that. …Media tend to focus on things that are not going well, the shadowy side of our society and there is often a lot of violence… High vibration sources instead – that help us see the loving peaceful side of society before bed… because the last thing we see or hear or read before bed is very ripe in our mind to impact our dream state, how we feel about ourselves and frankly, how we feel about the world.” ~ Keri Nola Today’s quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio episode that aired back on June 16… titled: Getting a Peaceful Sleep   (*Click on the titl...

Shrink Carbon Footprint

Shrink Your Carbon Footprint By Upgrading Your Furnace *Author: Olivia Mac You never go anywhere without your reusable shopping bag. You bike, walk, or use public transportation instead of a car every time you get the chance. You pack your lunch in the same eco-friendly container every day rather than using paper bags. But are you neglecting some simple ways closer to home to live a greener and more sustainable lifestyle? How about the way you heat your house? A new furnace can provide not just a cozier, more inviting living space for you and your family, but will also help you to help the earth. Did you know that inefficient home energy use is one of the biggest drains on environmental resources that most people engage in? And it's happening through the duration of every single hour that many folks spend at home. Ignorance of this problem is so widespread, and it's really a shame, because, in addition to bei...
