plastic bags and packaging

-- Quote of the Day --  "He has spent all his life in letting down empty buckets into empty wells; and he is frittering away his age in trying to draw them up again."  ~ Sydney Smith  -- Positive News --  Some interesting numbers for you… 90% of large Japanese cities have instigated plastic bag and packaging recycling and reduction programs. Methods for achieving this vary from region to region but tend to include the discontinuation of offering plastic bags, creating cooperation between shop owners and increasing benefits to consumers such as coupons, local currencies, gifts, discounts, etc. The country has been able to reach a 91% collection rate for plastic bags and packaging as well. According to a 2013 survey, 41% of the respondents bring their own bags and don’t accept retailer bags. However that means that 59% still consume single use bags and the reasons offered were convenience,...

Love All Of You

-- Quote of the Day --  "A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people."  ~ John F. Kennedy Love All Of You *Written by: Dr. Kate Siner - an internationally recognized author, speaker and mentor who advocates for a world that cares more - starting with you. http://www.katesiner.com    Recently, while being interviewed for network television I was asked if people are put off by my tattoos. I said that my work is about being yourself and living fully. So, whether people like them or not they at least show I am walking my talk! The world is constantly going to give us feedback about ourselves, some of which is bound to not be positive. One of the things that I see happen to my clients is that they sometimes get caught up in the idea that since they want to improve themselves that means there is something w...

Reuse holiday cards

-- Reuse : Holiday Cards -- I was really impressed this year how many folks I've seen reusing old holiday cards in a variety of ways. "Holiday cards" can apply to baby showers, valentines, xmas, etc. So most of you already know that we have a good sized section in our Trash Talk - It's Easy To Be Green book series that talks about greening celebrations and holidays, reusing of packaging and wrapping and cards and envelopes, etc. so I'm not going to repeat any of that here right now. For those of you interested in this just go to our Store page of our website.  Anyway I thought I'd discuss this concept a little today since the xmas holiday is closing and people are putting away their card displays. Someone gave us a jar of brownie mix this year - now the dry ingredients were layered to look really quite decorative and the lid was topped with a circle of festive cloth and a ribbon. The instructions were on the back of a holiday card... they had cut of ...

We are back!

-- Back --  Hey everyone - I'm back. I hope you had a chance to browse our archives both here on the blog and the radio show. As you know I took some time to just be, to recover and refresh. Whew! We sure got hit hard by the super-flu bug that was going around that decided to settle down deep in my lungs for weeks. Dave and I are feeling better now and with the holidays over we are ready to get going again on our home business - Brummet Media Group.   I may not be posting here every-single-day on this blog - due to working on another manuscript and finishing the garage project (we enclosed the open carport, built walls, insulated them and are now doing the interior drywall work). The garage project has already resulted in great savings - with more than 3/4 of the new walls done (insulated, plastic covered, boarded and house wrapped) we found that when cold days of -10˚C our garage was only 0˚. So that is quite the savings... especially when you factor in that the ...
