Choosing A Meaningful Career

Choosing A Meaningful Career

There was a time when we struggled to find the energy to go to work, aching for the moment the clock struck and work was done. Today, the biggest issue we have is learning to say "no" and to step back to recharge our own batteries, refill our bucket.

What changed? We changed our focus. Today, the focus of everything that we do is to empower others in becoming more proactive and helping them leave a lasting, positive legacy with every passing moment. To help them realize that with each new breath we are presented with an opportunity to make a difference.

It might sound flighty or fanciful but we have indeed heard from those we have influenced and this is the inspiration for all our hard work. To have helped people commit to recycling programs, donate useful items around the community, reduce costs by finding ways of repurposing or reusing “trash”, and to conserve both water and energy - lights our path and keeps us striving every day.

We have shown people how to take the story they have worked so hard on, and share it with the world with our self-help guide for authors on a shoestring budget. We have encouraged people to volunteer and support charities by featuring them or doing interviews with them on our blog. We have helped non-profits network and learn from one another. We have encouraged gardening - cleaning the air, purifying the water, reducing water run off, feeding families and sharing/trading with the community.

We have seen that once people realize that composting keeps organics out of the landfill (where they do more damage to the environment than the cars on our roads) they begin instead, to create beautiful soil. We have seen people switch to organic yard maintenance. We have heard from mothers of victims of violence, men who couldn’t speak about abuse, and others who have been able to move to the next stage of healing because of our work. We get amazing feedback from our drum students who tell us the wonderful ways music has affected their lives. Blog guests leave feeling supported, like someone has their back. Readers leave feeling inspired, motivated and empowered.

The main theme in everything we do is to inspire people to feel more positive and make a real and measurable difference. With the first book of poetry, Towards Understanding – I wanted to reach out to councillors to help them understand better, and to comfort victims of abuse and neglect with the words they cannot say.
Rhythm & Rhyme shares our passions for nature and deals with emotional issues like grief and caregiving.

With the Trash Talk series, we wanted to help people realize that little efforts matter, that they can ease their budget issues with some proactive tips, how they don’t have to donate cash to help out the community – they can do it with their “trash”. We wanted to play a role in reducing stresses on the planet and felt this was one of the most effective ways of getting the message out there.

With Purple Snowflake Marketing we included everything we learned from 1999-2021 in this one book. The aim here is to make the process of book promotion less daunting and help authors avoid costly mistakes.

With our cookbook, From One Small Garden - we help people make use of peak garden harvests, encouraging them to purchase from local producers or start their own gardens. They learn how to reduce food waste, extend their budget, discover nutritional information and agricultural facts about the food they eat. With our upcoming trilogy, we are honouring Dave's late-father's lifetime collection of poetry, photos, stories, articles and family memoirs.

And of course we practice everything we teach on our property, at work, online and in our home - so we have personally enjoyed the benefits of doing all of these things. Our blogs act as a way to give back to the world as well, offering valuable content and networking opportunities.

Dave's music is another way that he helps to change the world, simply by distracting people from their stresses and giving them joy instead. Dave has also donated time and resources to many causes, fundraisers, charity events, school music programs and underprivileged young percussionists and drummers.

So while of course we aim to make a living, pay our bills and plan for our retirement... we also desire to work in such a way that our efforts have a positive effect in the world. Doing this took time, took a lot of effort, a lot of planning, and a lot of collaboration.
