A few years ago I was a guest on the Life Is A Classroom Podcast where we discussed the incredible gardens we created on our previous property.

Recently I was inspired to listen to it again and thought this particular section would be of interest to you.

“We have hazelnuts & filberts & a peach tree, we have raspberries & blackberries, & strawberries & blueberries & haskap berries and josta berries & wolf berries or goji berries they are sometimes called, rhubarb & asparagus… those are most of the perennials that we have but there are a few I'm sure I'll remember later.

We have a 8 raised beds for a vegetable garden. ...So when we moved to this property it was on a hill, so we made these pathways to make it safe to walk around. The dirt here is clay and that gets slick when it rains. And we tiered the property to make it safe. Where there is a steep part of the hill we didn’t want to have to mow that when we are old – that is too steep. So that is where the garden beds went. We made sure that the beds went North To South and they are about 3 feet tall about 16 feet long and about 3 feet wide, built out of 4x4's.

We have a huge 3-bin system for composting, I’ve a huge passion for composting. We build all the soil for all the beds, and landscaping both inside and outside the fence.

When we first moved here we made sure that we encompassed the entire property with a fence, everything except for the driveway – we are paying a mortgage on that right? So we might as well use it.

We left a small area of lawn for the dogs, and also for resale as buyers do like lawn. And outside the fence, where the boulevard is, we only have to mow one strip down and one strip up, because the middle has been planted with shrubs and trees, all mulched in nicely. “
