Bears – Know what to do if you see one

Bears – Know what to do if you see one * Mark Danenhauer wrote this article. He also writes a blog, Jake's Nature Blog http://jakesnatureblog.com, that contains nature facts about the Rocky Mountains and being outdoors. If you are out hiking in the mountains then you are a lucky person because mountains are amazing places to be. But, what should you do if you happen to come across a bear? You may see a bear at a safe distance or you may come around a curve in the trail, surprise a bear and see one up close. What you do in either circumstance could save your life. For the first scenario - if you see a bear in the wild, here are some tips to follow. These tips are the same for both black bears and grizzly bears. Keep your distance. Give it lots of space so it doesn't feel threatened and can leave. Stay together and remain calm. Stay calm and keep together in a group as you will look larger. If you have children with you get them right next to your side or e...

RV batteries

*Today's article was written by: Raymond Laubert - retired from Air Force with 21 years of service who is traveling around the country with his wife Daisy and their two dogs. He is a Certified RV Inspector and has taken up writing articles and helping folks new to the RV world get the most from their investment. His articles are posted on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/RVInspectionService/ and on his website at http://rv-inspection-service.com . -- Recreation Vehicle Batteries -- There are two uses for batteries, coach and house batteries. Coach batteries are those that are used to start the RV. These are normal 12 v car or truck type batteries and are designed to provide a lot of amperage for a short period of time. The house batteries are deep cycle batteries which are designed to provide a lower amperage for a much longer period of time. Most of us will understand the coach batteries and can tell when it is time to replace t...

Camping / Travel Prep

-- Quote of the Day --  "It always rains on tents.  Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent."   ~Dave Barry -- Camping Season --  Yes, it is camping season ! Yay! (sound of heels clicking and hands clapping). Dave and I always joke that it is time to help out the farmers and go camping... because it rains and storms like 80% of the time that we can get away! lol I see RV'ers driving our roads in bliss (while the rest of us wither in jealousy). So the call to sleep in the woods has come... but are you ready? Last year I realized how frustrated I was becoming in the stages of set up prior to leaving. There was just so much to be done around the home and office in advance of the time away, and all the preparation of food and clothes and... only to get there and get a cramp or something and realize you don't have any pain killers, no muscle r...

eco-friendly travel

-- eco-travel -- Last week Dave scheduled an out-of-town workshop and drum repair and I had an appointment in the same area... so we decided to take the RV trailer and head out for several days, a little get-away, where we could camp and relax by a relatively unpopulated beach front on one of our many lakes in the Kootenays. Being off-season there were no other campers but there were a few dozen day use visitors along with their dogs. It was really nice to hear that most of the dogs came from rescue shelters, and all of them were really special dogs. I love dogs - so it isn't hard for me to fall in love the first few seconds after meeting a dog. So our dogs had the chance to socialize and play all day, along with a couple of long walks along the trails and beach every day. It was a little chilly so we were glad that we brought a lot of scrap wood with us for the camp fire (the wood was saved throughout last year from projects we did around the house). We were so grateful that w...

Product Review

-- Product Review -- Michael McClune of Café Viva Probiotic Coffee (www.probioticcoffee.com 1-567-laktera ) invited me to be a part of their product launch on Oct 28, and being a coffee lover – how could I refuse? He sent me seven samples of their instant coffee beverage line by Oct 29 th and the package arrived on Nov 8 th in the mail – in a padded yellow envelope. At only 80 calories per serving this drink can actually satisfy hunger because of the additional nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, glucose, etc.) while providing energy – as such this could be considered a potential weight control tool. Optimal benefit comes through consuming the product daily (once per day); the benefits from the prebiotic and probiotic blend will take 4-7 days to materialize depending on the individual's gut health. Interestingly this product can be added to yogurt, shakes, smoothies, served cold with ice, or mixed in with ice cream. I was glad to...

camping foods

I had some amazing food products sent to me for evaluation from eFoodsDirect … We waited until we went camping in our little RV trailer to test the foods, since one of the recommended applications is for outdoor activities like camping and hiking. The first meal I tried was the Tortilla Soup, and before it was half cooked I hear “That smells good”, and turned to see hubby Dave poking his head into the camper while I was cooking it for our lunch. We both found the meal to present a lovely Mexican flavored thick soup with very healthy ingredients including sea salt (my personal preference) although it was a bit salty for me. However Dave felt that was probably a good thing for outdoor activities after perspiring when one is typically prone to reach for the saltshaker. I was using a thin copper camping pot and found that it did scorch a bit on the bottom of the pan, as the instructions did say to boil for 12-15 min – however I feel a slight simmer would ha...

Eco-travel Options

-- Quote of the Day -- “ To change your life, you must change your perception of the world and everything around you. …The experience provides an opportunity to learn and grow from the challenges. At the Same time, the experience is inevitable because you create it in the first place. …The fact is, you cant help but create these experiences. They automatically happen because they represent what you believe to be true .”  ~ Gary Spinell, It Was You All Along -- Eco-Travel Tips -- In these times of economic strife and environmental concerns, it is no wonder that eco-tours, volunteer travel and stay-cations (staying at home during vacation time or within their borders) are becoming more popular. JTB Corp., a leading Japanese travel agency, released results of its survey on environmental awareness while traveling. According to the results, 70 percent of respondents are conscious of eco-friendly activities on their trips. There are dozens of things th...

Green Camping Tips

-- Quote of the Day -- “… One person cannot fix all the ills in the world and it is very easy to get overwhelmed by the enormity of what needs to occur. So my advice is always to choose one thing that you really care about and that you think your particular skill set can make a difference - and focus on that. Trust that your fellow human beings will take the lead on the other issues. …So just choose one thing, don’t feel like you have to volunteer everywhere. …If most of us did this, things will get significantly better. …Just choose to make a difference. …Your life and the world in which we live in is your responsibility; you are going to feel empowered when you accept that responsibility .” ~Jen Hancock Compassionate, Proactive Living (Mar 22) To hear the full interview use the link below: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/consciousdiscussions/2011/03/22/compassionate-proactive-living  -- Green Camping Tips -- Alternative low impact camping means to reduce ...
