-- Thoughts on Global Citizenship --  I’ve been chatting quite a bit about different ways of proactively participating as a global citizen. Let me dig a little deeper here offering you a few stats and a discussion on some things we can consider doing about it. For instance: Did you know that about 410,000 plastic cups are produced as waste by the airline industry every 15 minutes? Something to think about. How many of us have used cell phones, cords, out of date electronics and kitchen appliances we no longer use laying around? According to lecture I was listening to earlier this year, 152 million cell phones are thrown out every year and only 11% of these are recycled.   Some of the remaining may have been donated somewhere. Most are sitting in junk drawers and the like. -- Chatter -- Well, I do feel a bit burned out in the brain so I think today I will start off with some yoga, walk the dogs and finish turning one of the 3 compost bins that we have... leaving the office work for the heat of the day and the evening. As many of you are aware, the release period of any book project is a huge endeavor. No matter how much planning goes into the release, there are always moments of scrambling and panic over technical glitches - which could be anything, really, from an image that isn't working to a link that goes nowhere...until things get ironed out over the first few days of a release. Pre-release announcements, press release production and direct contact mailings have been the focus of our office for the last 4 days or so. And at the moment I'm approaching burn out, lol. So I'll take a few hours to get some other things done, and be back in the office clattering away on the keyboard this afternoon. ...If you want to check out the new release ...

Incidentally all week long, June 2-8, we'll be celebrating Bike to Work Week . In our small city we are fully aware of the limitations for cycling. Few safe lanes for cyclists, narrow side streets... busy highway and long open sections of road ways with no shade from summer heat. However, the city staff has greatly improved many of the bike friendly parks and the Trans Canada Trail (made on the former railway track beds) also runs through the city and has been greatly improved as well. Tree planting is encouraged every spring in the daily newspaper's gardening segment and many community groups have done planting...
