Purpose Driven Grocery Shopping

Purpose Driven Grocery Shopping   Grocery shopping can have a positive impact on the environment, your budget, the community you live in and the nutritional value of your meals. This is why we are seeing such an increase in the local food movement from "100 mile diet" campaigns to food action coalitions helping restaurants and grocery stores support local food suppliers. For the individual grocery shopper, this means taking the time to find and purchase from retailers that stock locally grown and produced foods - for us, this means within British Columbia (Canada). Luckily, Dave and I also live in an agricultural paradise, and this special community truly cares about the health of its valley. Most of the restaurants here in Creston (BC, Canada) and the grocery stores offer locally grown foods.  Going a step further, gardening in your yard, on your balcony, in front of the window or along a walkway can have a positive effect on the environment too. In fact, Dave and I grow muc...

Our lives revolve around it from our waking moment onwards. Food and feasting go hand in hand and even celebrations all over the world and across all cultures are centred on food.  Ancient East Indian scriptures divide food into three categories: Satvic or pure foods : These are foods that heal, comfort  and increase longevity ; these tend to be juicy, smooth and easily digested. This group of foods increases intelligence and strength. Rajasik or the tasteful foods : These are salty, spicy, bitter and can give rise to ill health, grief or discomfort. Tamasik or the impure foods : These include stale, cold, left over foods, impure and half cooked causing great harm to the mind and the body. Food is one aspect of our life that we take for granted. ...

Save money, be healthier, reduce negative impact

-- What We Eat & Drink -- We eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with perhaps a few snacks in between and several drinks throughout the day. Each time we put something in our mouth we have the opportunity to vote on the direction we want to see society take in the future: - Looking at how the food was grown – whether it was done sustainably, fairly, ethically, and environmentally sound. - We can learn more about the products by reading the labels and visiting the websites… choosing producers have more of a positive impact on the environment, that ship the product fewer miles, those that support causes we believe in, and those that use green energy. - We can simply choose to make meals based not only on what is on sale, but what is in season locally, produced locally… and save a great deal of money. - We can choose to eat less meat; simply put less meat on the plate, or less meat than recipes call for. - Take a look at how much packaging is associated wit...

Tips to Prevent Food Waste

Let’s start with some food waste numbers… As a society we waste 40% of the food produced on average. Households are estimated to be responsible for about 15% of that. While food waste is a valuable resource, sadly 90% of US food waste is landfilled. …now remember that those numbers are an average over all the foods produced. Before food reaches us there is a whole lot of stuff that goes on. Think about the land used, soil consumed or depleted, water and energy (including fossil fuels to run tractors etc.) all just to get the product harvested. Upon harvesting up 20-70% of the crop is wasted. Yep wasted. Why? Because consumers are expecting a pepper to look just so and that requires certain standards that have to be met. OK so here the product is harvested and then it is shipped to a warehouse where it is sorted and packaged and sent to various distribution outlets or direct to large processors (like soup or jam or juice companies). At the...
