Recommended Resources Why are backyard and schoolyard and civic gardens so darn important anyway?  Take for instance one single, but well-known, species the Monarch Butterfly.  This, as you are already aware, is a migrating species and because of their far reaching needs we are seeing that much of their habitat was destroyed.  As such communities are stepping up to provide butterfly habitat in well over 210,000 gardens as well as individual back yards, civic roadways and parking lots, in school gardens, business landscaping and city parks.  Farmers are joining in too, making sure they provide habitat for wildlife on their land as well, in between the fields of monoculture.
