The joy of pets

* Yesterday I posted an article written about a beloved dog we miss to this day - and I thought it would be interesting to share some brief articles here about the 3 dogs and 1 cat that have shared our home since that fateful day some 7 or 8 years ago. Onyx   * Written by Dave Brummet in 2009 Onyx, a two year old Border Collie/Chocolate Lab cross, rescued by the SPCA, had been abused most of his life and had a deep distrust of people. They had deemed him practically un-adoptable due to his aggressive behavior - towards men in particular. It turned out he was never what is termed an ‘aggressive’ dog, he is what is considered as ‘reactive’ in that when something reminds him of his abuse, he reacts by barking and fretting. When we first brought Onyx home he had skin rashes from extended kennel life and was very thin of hair and muscle. We discovered scars on his chin and three shattered teeth that might have been caused by a kick in the face. We could ima...

Skylo's Legacy

  * Today's article was written about 7 years ago after the passing of one of our dogs. I am so passionate about adopting animals from rescue shelters and hope that sharing this story means as much to as it has to me . Skylo joined our family after spending a lot of time with the SPCA (6 months) and periodic stays with temporary homes. He was about 18 months old at the time and was about to be put down because no one wanted a dog that constantly ran away. No one seemed to realize that the poor thing was incredibly restless, unstable from the lack of a secure home and didn’t know what he was supposed to do. We soon realized the beautifully marked dog was not only strong willed and yet willing to please, he was also full of energy and intelligence that made training a pleasure. Skylo quickly became more than a “dog”.   During his 6-year stay with us, he was also a therapy for me, helping me deal with an anxiety disorder simply with his comforting and pr...

Social Networking Tips

If used correctly social networking sites can be a phenomenal way of building name recognition and maintaining contact with potential readers, customers or clients across the planet… if used incorrectly it can be a huge waste of time. The first thing to understand is that there are probably 100 or more social networking sites out there and each will have a specific type of user, a unique genre or topic, and each will use different formats that members can explore. As such, being on several sites can be a very savvy endeavor.  Wherever you decide to become a member of, it is important to avoid using the sites to talk about yourself, and how great you or your business or book is. Only about 10% of your posts should be marketing posts, 10-20% can be announcements such as your upcoming media appearance, but the rest should be geared to developing ongoing networking relationships with your contacts. Try posting tips or quotes and resources that your targeted ...

Nature In All Its Glory

-- Quote of the Day --  “I think because I was so passionate about bringing attention to the ocean creatures, and the eco-awareness it gave a depth to what I was doing; it was more than dressing up; it was about using myself as a bridge between ocean creatures and land creatures – bringing the message that we really need to do something to help with these issues. …I think it is really important that whatever you do in life that there is a large part of it that you would do regardless of the finance or social status – it is purely something that you do because you have such a passion and a love and recognizing that something needs to happen. ...In one particular area the local fisherman decided to do eco-tourism rather than kill the animals - they set up a program where they take people out in tiny vessels, where you are not allowed to interact in an invasive way… to view their beauty and not kill them.” ~ Hannah Fraser To...

defining and seeking passion

-- Quote of the Day --  “Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand – and melting like a snowflake.”  ~ Marie Beyon Rey Defining and Seeking Out Passion Passion, as defined in the dictionary, refers to a powerful or compelling emotional feeling similar to desire, amorous love, and ardor. Passion can also go beyond the emotion, and into the intellectual passion of research, study, science, and discovery. No matter what the studies and experts might tell us – passion, or what we enjoy to do, is a highly tuned individual response, it can mean something different to any one person, and can change throughout our lifetime. Business studies have shown us that people will have higher performance, better efficiency, less sick days and are happier at work – if they are doing what they enjoy. At the same time if we become too involved in our passi...
