chatter

-- Chatter -- I wanted to take the opportunity today to encourage our readers to browse the blog pages via the tabs on the top of the screen there, below the blog name. You'll find a media page that lists the most recent 50 or so interviews and media appearances that I've done (in the order of oldest on the top of the page to newest at the bottom).  By doing so you'll find interesting discussions, learn more from us and about us, but also discover wonderful informative resources (sites, blogs, talk radio, etc.) that you may want to follow regularly. For those of you looking for media exposure for your product, business or service - these resources might prove to be marketing opportunities for you as well. Feel free to share whatever links on the media page with your social networking circles as well. It is a great way to show support for our work, the media member, and to also spread the information around. You'll also find a section that refers to product revie...

Glass Recycling

-- Quote of the Day -- "No power in society, no hardship in your condition can depress you, keep you down, in knowledge, power, virtue, influence, but by your own consent. " ~ William Ellery Channing -- Positive News --  Kudo's to Austria Glass Recycling (a non-profit organization based in Australia) who recycled more glass in 2013 than any other year since the country began glass recycling more than 35 years ago.  More than 234,000 tons of glass was collected for recycling, an increase of more than 3,500 tons from the previous year (2012)... which averages out to about 26.8 kg per person.  It is encouraging to see the incredible support people give the recycling industry and proves that with education we become more willing to participate religiously. Advances in technology, efficiency, staffing and location of collection sites also plays a role in the increased participation.  Success breeds success, they say - ...

Positive Living

-- Quote of the Day --  "The only disability in life is a bad attitude."  ~ Scott Hamilton -- Positive Living --  I've often heard people stating that there is little hope for humans - but I beg to differ. I have taken the other view. I believe that change is already happening and I see it every day. Take for instance the fact that no one even heard of recycling anything beyond newspapers, glass and returnable beer and wine containers when I was growing up and very few people actually did it. Today recycling, reuse, repurpose, rent, reduce, and so on are common language and are being enacted by a growing number of people every single day. It is a part of life now. Cities are getting greener, there are green living initiatives and rebates available, new technologies are being invented, greener cars, greener buildings... knowledge abound. There are huge movements going beyond organic into sustainable, and beyond sustainable to reg...

Media Event

-- Quote of the Day --  "If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until it gets so ugly you can hardly bear to look at it. A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely. " ~ Roald Dahl  --  Media Event --  http://www.blogtalkradio.com/toughtalkradionetwork/2014/05/15/tough-talk-everything-about-media-confessions Host of the Everything About Media Confessions , Tony Gambone, will have me along with another guest today to talk about - you guessed it: dealing with the media. I'll offer lots of tips today so do stop in and listen. I believe the live show will also open a chat room up for listeners,...

Joys of Gardening

-- Quote of the Day --  "I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs."   ~ Joseph Addison --  On With the Gardening -- Yesterday a friend and I toured Beltane Nursery (one of the dozens here in Creston) and had a wonderful time. To me, touring a nursery is equivalent to a vacation, a holiday, a trip. I love it so much! Seeing all the amazing textures and colors and plants I'm not yet familiar with, those that tug at my heart and want to bring home one day... it is exciting and fun and educational. I came home with just a FEW boxes of plants. lol  I had decided to pot up all our perennial herbs from the garden (to give me more room out there) and put them on the deck where I can access them a few steps from the kitchen. So I have 6 pots out there of lemon balm, rosemary, chives, thyme, basil, etc. Inter-planted with those are some allysm that will set off the h...

Media event

-- Whew --  What a busy spring we have had here. We finished turning all 3 compost bins - sifting the finished compost bin, and using the contents to top off garden beds where we could (some beds had things planted in them already). Then - created the start of our landscaping projects on this property with a 30' X 5 or 6' wide bed along the fence line inside the yard. I planted purple iris and a clematis rescued from other areas of the yard (where the original owners planted them) that they weren't doing well at. Then Hal (who unfortunately recently passed) offered us some day lilies and blue hyacynth flowers from a bed he wanted to take out. So we took some divisions of those... then another neighbor friend allowed us to take a few old fashioned very early blooming bulbs from the side of her house... so those are all in the new landscape bed. I also planted some nasturtium, sunflower, peony, bearded tongue penstimum, (spelling?), and some daisy... some 4oclock etc. So...

World of Writing, interview

-- World of Writing --  * Today we have the pleasure of hosting an interview with author H. Alan Day - a rancher and cowboy for most of his life. He and his sister, Sandra Day O’Connor, co-authored the New York Times bestselling memoir, Lazy B, about growing up on a southwestern cattle ranch. In his new memoir, The Horse Lover: A Cowboy’s Quest to Save the Wild Mustangs , released this past March by University of Nebraska Press, Alan shares his story about creating the first government-sponsored wild horse sanctuary and caring for and training 1500 wild mustangs. Alan’s website is www.TheHorseLover.com .     Q: What have you learned about working with your co-writer? I’ve now co-authored two books and they have been different experiences. For Lazy B, Sandra and I agreed that I would write my stories about growing up on the ranch and send them to her. She did some editing and that was about it. For The Horse Lover, which I co-a...
