Celebrating Green Leaders

-- Quote of the Day -- "Laws control the lesser man.  Right conduct controls the greater one."   ~Chinese Proverb -- Positive News -- Kudos for Green Actions! I read several articles and posts about the Current US president, Baraak Obama, announced his intent to expand an already existing marine preserve, creating the world's largest protected and designated marine preserve. He has also reportedly created a special marine task force that is meant to help end illegal fishing (black-market fishing and fraud). Apparently this is a huge problem, yet I've not heard of it until now. Basically about 20% of the fish caught are considered to be illegal. And just this month Mr. Obama introduced pollution control limits on power plants, which are apparently unprecedented. Celebrating green business

-- Quote of the Day --  "We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance." ~ Japanese Proverb -- Positive News --  Kudos to the Japanese Sake Production Company, Kikusui, who won an award for their efforts to create a healthier planet. Their policy now embraces the reuse of wine bottles, reducing energy use and c02 emissions (about 500 grams per bottle). The company also embraces the concept of c02 absorption via forests, and began supporting the Forests for Japanese Crested Ibises project - which focuses on improving habitat, preserving forest land and planting trees. Find Dave and Lillian Brummet, excerpts from their books, their radio program, blog, and more at: http://brummet.ca * Support the Brummets by telling your friends, clicking those social networking buttons, or visiting the Brummet's Store - and help raise funds for charity as well!

Winterizing Flower Beds

 * Written by Michael Handley As the days grow shorter and the air cools off, it's time to put your flower beds to rest for the winter. Not only is fall a pleasant time to be in the garden but it's essential that you get the flowers ready for the long winter months ahead. If you want to know what you can plant in the fall that will bloom in the early spring, try taking online horticulture courses. You'll get advice from professionals as well as the opportunity to meet fellow students and share ideas. Plant Debris One of the essential tasks of winter preparation is to remove dead heads and plant debris from the flower beds. Not only does this make the flower beds look better but it removes many of the winter hiding places for insects. This debris should be thrown away, not thrown in the compost pile. Organic Material Once the annuals are removed, you're ready to add organic material to the soil. This can be manure or compost. If you c...

Green Business

-- Quote of the Day --   "Waste not the smallest thing created, for grains of sand make mountains, and atomies infinity. Waste not the smallest time in imbecile infirmity, for well thou knowest that seconds form eternity." ~ E. Knight -- Green Business -- A new project is now being implemented by several Japanese family restaurants that helps conserve biodiversity in rice patties and then serving that rice to patrons of the restaurants.  The Living Things Friendly Rice Paddies project also offers hands-on experience, demonstrations for enhancing biodiversity and both the sharing and creation of techniques for sustainable farming (that also offers profit) and increased biodiversity. Books for Africa

-- Quote of the Day -- "A catless writer is almost inconceivable. It's a perverse taste, really, since it would be easier to write with a herd of buffalo in the room than even one cat; they make nests in the notes and bite the end of the pen and walk on the typewriter keys."  ~Barbara Holland -- Non-profit Event -- Have you heard of this new program called Books For Africa ?  Our friend in Africa, Stan Almendro, informed us that they have an international fundraising project with various events going on that will help run their non-profit projects that encourage African youth to write and sing and more.   One of the upcoming events will be held here: Books for Africa Sunday, November 30 at 8:00am in UTC+02 Alberton, Gauteng in Alberton, Gauteng  They also have an event going on via Indiegogo - a crowdfunding platform that pools donations together. teaching compassion

-- Quote of the Day -- I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.” ~Nelson Mandela -- Positive News -- Miracle-kids.net has a wonderful program ( Hand to Paw ) going in the US that is helping young people from a troubled past make a difference by caring for homeless animals. The youth learn how to love and care for other living beings, grow a healthy respect for volunteering and nonprofit organizations, and increase the content on their resume by developing new skills and gaining work experience. Since many animal related fields accept volunteer work experience as valid entry skill training, and this eases their acceptance into a wide array o...
