-- May is Water Awareness Month --

The city of Castlegar, BC – Canada – has sponsored yet another rain barrel initiative in their city. We are so jealous!!! For a limited time citizens of the Castlegar community can purchase rain barrels for less than $25… which is a huge savings since rain barrels in retail stores cost well over $100 and as much as $210! The cheapest one I could find online ran about $60 but it is located in California and would have to be shipped from there to here in Canada - increasing fossil fuel expenditure and shipping costs.

In 2007 we interviewed a rain collection expert, Dan Chapotelle, and that discussion prompted Dave and I to purchase rain barrel diversion kits for our four downspouts on the house. However, since then we've been on the search for affordable rain barrels. Unfortunately, our community does not have a food industry that produces barrels as "waste", so the opportunity to make our own is limited. I'm going to brave a call to the Castlegar staff and ask them if we can purchase any of their rain barrels that do not sell. One never knows...

Each barrel can hold 55 gallons or more and because the movement of water is powered by gravity, they are ideal for drip irrigation and soaker hose applications.

I've also seen rain pillows which are like large dog beds that can be filled with rain water - these are equiped with a mini-pump to ease irrigation and can range in price from $180 to $1000. The handy thing about this is the pillow can be stored under decks and places like that, out of sight and protected from elements.

We've done several interviews with environmental experts who've touched on water issues and the list below shares some of the interviews that focused on the subject throughout the show.
