Carolina State University and Santa Monica College are pleased to announce "Mid-Scale Vermicomposting," a one-day seminar and tour. The seminar will demonstrate how businesses and institutions can save costs by
using earthworms to convert "waste" into a valuable soil amendment. Learn about vermicomposting, types of vermi-technologies, and details about how vermicomposting is saving money at schools, universities, prisons, military
bases, and businesses. You'll also gain knowledge of how vermicompost and extracts (tea) can be used, and their effects on plant growth and disease suppression.
Santa Monica College started their vermicomposting operation in 2000. Over 300,000 earthworms process ncafeteria food preparation scraps nand cardboard in a 16-foot long, temperature-controlled continuous-flow vermi-system.

-- Local Business Increases Green Efforts --
We'd like to celebrate today a
local business won
environmental awards – “Recycling Council of BC 2012 RCBC Environmental Award”
- for their incredible work to become a more sustainable company. According to
the Creston Valley Advance newspaper
article: “Columbia Brewery has slashed
water consumption by 20%, cut fuel usage by 16.9% and reduced electricity use
by 7.1%, while recycling 99.4% of the waste and byproducts created by the
industry”. The company tied for top spot in the brewery sector (over
competing firms like Cocoa-Cola and
other big wigs in the industry). We are so proud of their work and are thrilled
to celebrate their achievements today.
